III Police Department - Current and Future Activities The Finance Commission meeting was held in the Community Room of the new Mount Prospect Police and Fire Headquarters. Prior to a presentation by the Police Department on current and future activities, Police Chief Ron Pavlock and Deputy Chief Ron Richardson conducted a tour of the new Police Department facilities. The tour included the command center with the computer monitoring equipment, property room, records area with the new cantilever filing system, jail cells, interview rooms, administrative offices and the investigations area. During the tour Ron Richardson explained the security system within the building as well as the reasons behind some of the unique features of the building. At the conclusion of the tour Officers Bill Roscop and John Wagner of the Crime Prevention Unit joined the meeting. The two officers and Deputy Chief Richardson and Chief Pavlock each made presentations to the members of the Finance Commission. Some of the topics addressed included major concerns of residents, the Neighborhood Watch Program, community -oriented policing, and the problem of gang activity in Mount Prospect. The members of the Finance Commission expressed concern over increased gang activity in Mount Prospect. Ron Richardson responded to several questions by members of the Commission and explained that gang activity is somewhat contained and identified in Mount Prospect and that intelligence gathering and pressure are very effective against gangs. Chief Pavlock also reported to the Finance Commission members that there have been some past successes in Mount Prospect in dealing with some of these problems. For instance, in the area known as Boxwood, a combination of targeting resources of money, manpower, and resident cooperation over the past 8 - 10 years has resulted in major improvements in that area. The Village is planning to embark on a similar path in the Southern part of town where some major problems exist. This proactive approach, beginning with a group called VISIONS which was formed about a year ago, is the beginning of a Village -wide effort to address and solve the problems in that area. All Village departments are represented in VISIONS and they are working closely with residents in the area to identify and find solutions to the problems. The members of the Finance Commission expressed their appreciation to Chief Pavlock, Deputy Chief Richardson and Officers Roscop and Wagner for their presentations and the insights into the operations and activities of the Police Department. IV Adjournment The meeting was adjourned at 10:20 p.m. The next meeting is scheduled for August 26, 1993. Respectfully submitted, Carol L. Widmer Assistant Finance Director
