discussion the minutes were approved as written.
Citizen's Forum
Harold Rentschler of 424 Larkdale introduced himself. Mr.
Rentschler expressed the thought that Mount Prospect should be
more aggressive in its recycling efforts. He stated that plas-
tic and tin cans should be added as soon as possible. The commit-
tee informed him that these materials would be added by the end
of the year.
Debbie Pizzato, 309 S. Main St., introduced herself and ex-
pressed her wholehearted support for the recycling program. She
believes more should be done to focus public awareness on the
recycling situation. She also would like to see multifamily
building residents included as soon as possible.
Mike Burkhardt of 1205 Boxwood Dr. stated that he agreed with
Mr. Rentschler and Ms. Pizzato on all points and reiterated his
desire for multifamily participation as soon as possible. The
Recycling Commission agreed that Boxwood would be a good place
to include in the multifamily recycling pilot project starting
in the near future. Glen Andler promised to get back in touch
with Mr. Burkhardt concerning same.
Some discussion was devoted to restaurant and tavern participa-
tion in our recycling program. This topic will be placed on the
agenda for the next meeting.
Proaram Review
Curbside recycling program - It was noted that participation in
the recycling program stands at over the 70% mark. To date,
over 5-1/2 million pounds of material has been diverted from the
landfill. Best Hardware, Dominicks, Jewel/Osco and Mount Pros-
pect Lawn Mower all have shown interest in selling the yard
waste recycling bags. A discussion followed among the commis-
sioners bringing up, among other things, that no guarantee had
been given verbally or any other way to the first suppliers as
to who would be able to sell them in the future. However, it
was agreed upon by the commissioners to not expand on vendors or
locations at this time. This is the first year of the program
and, until we have one year of experience, the distribution of
bags should not be expanded. Also, Public Works has not had one
single request by residents to have the bags at other locations.
Glen Andler showed the generic recycling bag that Jewel/Osco is
selling. Jewel's Corporate Headquarters had been contacted and
a request made for them to put up a sign informing people that
these are not the accepted Mount Prospect yard material bags.
Glen Andler stated that the Village has already gone through
80,000 bags and are out of bags and awaiting a new order.
Participation in the pickup of yard waste stands at about 20 -
25%.
Glen Andler told the Commission that there are still concerns
being voiced by residents over the price of the bags and just
what costs are included. He suggested that perhaps an explana-
tion should be included in the next Newsletter or as the Village
Manager suggested, an ad could be placed in the local newspa-
per. Another possible means would be to put a message on the
monthly water bill.
After some discussion, it was decided that a message should be
included on the next available water bill and that an article be
placed in the upcoming issue of the Newsletter. Also, at the
upcoming Public Works Open House, the two bags will be displayed.
Glen Andler further informed the Commission that BFI is now
picking up brush on every scheduled garbage pickup day versus
just the first full week of the month. This will be done at no
extra cost, and the information has been included in the reprint-
ing of the yard material collection brochure.
Chairman Westlake discussed his recent speaking engagement be-
fore the Mount Prospect Jaycees. Glen Andler also informed the
Commission that the Senior Center's AARP group has requested a
speaker for sometime in August between the hours of 11:00 a.m.
and 12:00 noon. Dick Bachhuber volunteered for this speaking
engagement.
Multifamily
The Commission is aware of the fact that many Speak Outs concern
recycling in multifamily housing units and it was the consensus
of the Commission that we proceed expeditiously on working out
the necessary arrangements. Glen Andler will check with Plan-
ning and Zoning on any conflicts regarding drop-off sites within
refuse dumpster areas, will refine projected costs of equipment
and labor charges and will report back at a future meeting.
Facility Tour Update
On June 9th, the Commission members, Mayor and Trustees, and/or
other interested Village employees will be able to tour the Land
& Lakes compost site, Mallard Lake Landfill, and the proposed
balefill site in Bartlett. The group will depart at approximate-
ly 8:00 a.m. from the Public Works building and should be return-
ing by 2:00 p.m. J Glen Andler will arrange for a Public Works
van or vans depending upon the number of people attending.
There' -will be no rain day.
Public Works Open House
Glen Andler reviewed the list for volunteers to man the Recy-
cling Booth at the Open House from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The
time slot between noon and 1:00 p.m. was still available. Dick
Bachhuber and Brian Robertson volunteered their services for
this time slot. The mini surplus office equipment auction will
be held that same day at 11:00 a.m. in the Vehicle Maintenance
area. Also, the Mount Prospect Park District will have a com-
post display set up immediately adjacent to the Public Works
Recycling Display.
Other Business
Chairman Westlake updated the Commission on the balefill situa-
tion and the EPA's stand on same.
Next Meeting
The next meeting will be held on Thursday, June 21, at 7:30 p.m.
at the Public Works Facility.
Adjournment
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 9:30
p.m.
Res ctfully
