and Ken Westlake.

Harold and Doris Rentschler and Carol Tortorello -
Mount Prospect residents
Ken Van Byssum - Recycling Coordinator, ARC Disposal Company
ABSENT: Mary Winkler and Elizabeth Herbert
CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Westlake at 7:35 PM.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The minutes from the April 18 regular meeting and the May 2 special
meeting were approved as written.
CITIZENS FORUM
The Commission welcomed Mr. and Mrs. Rentschler and Mrs. Tortorello to
the meeting. The residents indicated they were in attendance out of
interest and support of the Village's recycling efforts.
CONTINUED DISCUSSION OF THE NEW SOLID WASTE CONTRACT
The Commissioners reviewed and edited draft copies of
educational/informational materials developed by Public Works staff;
Mayor's letter, brochure detailing solid waste services, bin
instruction sheet and bin insert. The Commission requested editing
revisions be made and be reviewed again, at a special meeting, prior to
the June Commission meeting.
Mr. Andler provided the Commission with the bid results for the
18 -gallon recycling bins. The bid was awarded to the low bidder,
Rehrig Pacific. He also presented proposed designs and approximate
cost for yard/refuse stickers, decals for yard containers and
instruction sheets (static cling and adhesive). Mr. Andler indicated
he will seek an additional proposal for competitive pricing of
materials.
COMMISSION APPOINTMENTS
Chairman Westlake updated the Commission on the status of the Mayor's
appointments. Harold Rentschler stated he had been contacted by the
Mayor and filled out the appropriate forms for appointment. Apparently
the Mayor has identified another individual who has strong interest in
the Village's solid waste/recycling programs.
STATUS OF RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE VILLAGE BOARD
Chairman Westlake referred the Commission members to his letter
addressing the Commission's recommendations on the following issues:
mixed paper collection, name change of the Commission and the Solid
Waste Coordinator position. He stated these items were on the agenda
for the May 21 Board Meeting and encouraged all Commissioners to attend.
OTHER
Lisa Angell reported she had been contacted by former Recycling
Commissioner Steve Polit. Mr. Polit requested the Commission address
the need for available disposal methods for household hazardous
materials. Although he recognized this has been a topic of concern for
the Commission, he feels there is an urgency to this matter. He
apparently has observed at least one resident using the Village sewer
system to dispose of materials because we lack proper disposal
systems. Ms. Angell stated she had been in contact with the Illinois
Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA)regarding the Village's
application for siting a household hazardous collection day. Mount
Prospect will be considered for a fall 1991 siting by the IEPA.
NEXT MEETING
The next regular Commission meeting was set for Thursday, June 20.
There will be a special meeting to review revised educational/
promotional materials, May 30.
ADJOURN
There being no other business the motion to adjourn was moved, seconded
and unanimously approved. The meeting adjourned at 9:57 PM.
Respectfully submitted,
M. Lisa Angell
