SOLID WASTE PROGRAMS/MONTHLY DATA: The Solid Waste Coordinator gave an update on solid waste programs which included, spring clean-up week, yard material collection and multifamily recycling. The Coordinator stated monthly data for April and May would be distributed at the next meeting. The Coordinator than opened discussion regarding the addition of scrap metal to the recycling program. The Commission was asked to develop a list of items that would qualify as scrap metal to submit to ARC Disposal. ARC will be asked to respond to the list based on their capablities to collect the material, preparation of the items and viable markets. The Commission identified several specific items that could be collected as scrap metal, including a number that are also identified as bulk items; bicycles, plumbing fixtures, lawn care equipment, barbecue grills. As in previous meetings, there were concerns as to the practical aspects of implementing such a program. SOLID WASTE INFORMATION BROCHURE The Solid Waste Coordinator distributed a rough copy of information to be included in the residential solid waste brochure. It was recommended that a subcommittee be formed to draft the brochure. Commissioners Bachhuber, Winkler and Vice Chair Luteri volunteered to serve on the subcommittee and will meet Wednesday, May 25 with the Solid Waste Coordinator to complete the first draft. SOLID WASTE AGENCY OF NORTHERN COOK COUNTY Vice Chair Luteri stated he had participated in an inspection of the transfer station earlier in the day and everything was ship-shape. At this time approximately 500 tons of waste are being processed daily. He also stated that the yard material being accepted at the transfer station is being sent to Wisconsin where Scott's has a composting facility. The Citizens Advisory Committee has revised the inspection forms for better clarification and is considering reducing the frequency of inspections to once a month rather than once every two weeks. In cooperation with SWANCC, Harper College is conducting a prairie grass study on the grounds surrounding the transfer station. It was also reported that a decision from the Army Corps of Engineers regarding the balefill is expected prior to the Colonel's retirement in June.
