Centennial Commission Update Discussion 04/14/2015 Village of Mount Prospect Mount Prospect, Illinois INTEROFFICE MEMORANDUM TO:MAYOR AND VILLAGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES FROM:ACTING VILLAGE MANAGER DATE:APRIL 8, 2015 SUBJECT:COMMITTEE OF THE WHOLE DISCUSSION –APRIL 14, 2015: CENTENNIAL COMMISSION UPDATE The Village Centennial Commission has already been meeting for several months and well into the planning stages of preparing for numerous events between now through the balance of 2017. This group is led by Jean Murphy and Leo Floros and with 11 very dynamic and energized members thereis no shortage of ideas forthis once in a lifetime celebration, as you know you only turn 100 once. Co-Chair Jean Murphy will lead a presentation outlining the activities planned over the next several years and the estimated expenses and projected revenues anticipated from the sponsorships. This commission is well on their way to a number of events and as the events come closer to reality the publicity for the events will start showing up in the near future. DAVID STRAHL H:\\VILM\\Cow\\2015\\VB Memo COW 4082015.docx Village of Mount Prospect Mount Prospect, Illinois MEMORANDUM TO:MAYOR AND VILLAGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES FROM:CENTENNIAL COMMISSION CO-CHAIR JEAN MURPHY DATE:APRIL 8, 2015 SUBJECT:OVERVIEW OF CENTENNIAL COMMISSION ACTIVITIES For those who don’t know me, I am Jean Murphy, co-chairman of the Centennial Commission with Leo Floros. Many of my fellow Commission members are here tonight. Could all of you please stand? As you all know, the Village will officially turn 100 on February 3, 2017. The 11-member Commission, assembled by Mayor Arlene Juracek and charged with planning this celebration, sees its role as creating a framework for the Village-wide celebration by providing diverse ways of communicating with all ages and segments of our population and business community and then planning a few key, one-time-only events. These will include a re-enactment of the signing of Mount Prospect’s papers of incorporation in the restored Central Schoolhouse in February, 2017; the dedication of a lasting memorial to the founding families during the 2017 Oktoberfest celebration; and holding a fire hydrant painting event during the fall of 2016. Last October we unveiled the logo for the year-long celebration, designed by a graphic arts student from Harper College, and we also held a meeting with representatives of every local organization, club and church we could find, as well as representatives of the parks districts, school districts and library. I also appeared before this Board around that time to outline our plans and to request seed money for our initiatives. The Board generously allocated us $50,000 at that time and we have been investing it wisely ever since. Since last October, we have signed a contract with Ravenswood Events to develop the mechanics of a Centennial website and host and maintain it. And just after the first of this year, we hired a part-time person to develop the content for the website. For that task we enlisted Lindsay Rice, executive director of the Mount Prospect Historical Society. We felt that no one was better qualified, considering that she has access to all of Mount Prospect’s historical files and is also amazingly talented when it comes to Re: OVERVIEW OF CENTENNIAL COMMISSION ACTIVITIES April 8, 2015 Page 2 website design. Once developed, the website, which we plan to launch next January, will be linked to the Village site, Historical Society site, library site and potentially others. It will include a comprehensive Centennial calendar of events, video capabilities and constantly changing historical tidbits about the Village. We will also be seeking sponsors whose logos will be prominently featured on the site. In fact, we already have one Diamond sponsor. Randhurst Village has generously purchased our inaugural sponsorship for $10,000. We also plan to have a Facebook page for the celebration and possibly a Twitter account. And for those who still prefer traditional media, we hope to have a glossy commemorative guide printed which will be paid for through advertising and will tell the story of the anniversary events and will also give some historical tidbits about the Village. Periodic postcards listing events will also be sent to residents and there will be light post banners hanging around town. Businesses will also receive small window “clings” to post in their windows when they renew their business licenses for 2017. We are trying not to miss a trick! Once you get beyond the marketing and publicity part of the celebration, the Commission will primarily be adding special elements to existing events which are hosted annually by other local groups and by the Village’s Special Events Commission. For instance, we hope that the Downtown Merchants Association will specially brand their Cruise Nights thatyear to coordinate with the anniversary. We also hope that the Special Events Commission will theme their holiday tree lighting to the anniversary and that the Mount Prospect Historical Society will plan an especially unique Housewalk that year. We alsoexpect that the Celestial Celebration will become a grand birthday party in the Village. In the tradition of Mount Prospect, we want everyone to pitch in and play a part in the celebrating of Mount Prospect’s Centennial. This isn’t the Commission’s celebration. It is everyone’s celebration. Members of the Centennial Commission have also been in discussions with the Mt. Prospect Park District about a potential celebration week during the summer in which their regularly-scheduled Monday and Thursday night concerts will be jointly promoted with a River Trails concert and a Village Green concert and a Randhurst Village concert and maybe a Capannari’s movie night to make an entire week of activities. This is in the very early stages. Two of our members are also working on ideas for how the young people of Mount Prospect can become involved, beyond encouraging teachers to bring their students to the Central School, which we hope will be fully restored by then. Re: OVERVIEW OF CENTENNIAL COMMISSION ACTIVITIES April 8, 2015 Page 3 The Centennial Commission has also suggested some one-time-only special events that various groups might want to take on, ranging from planting purple and white flower bulbs all over town in the fall of 2016 to the ringing of church bells at midnight when we usher in the anniversary year. Mount Prospect has long been a mosaic in which many people and institutions have come together to form the fabric of a cohesive, active community. We see the Centennial celebration as a year-long event which should follow in this tradition. The Centennial Commission plans to raise funds for all of this through a variety of means. Former Mayor Skip Farley and Former Village Trustee Leo Floroshave graciously agreed to lead the effort to solicit sponsorships from local businesses. We also plan to sell items like t-shirts and commemorative posters; allow residents to purchase “$10 shares” in the Centennial, similar to those sold by the Green Bay Packers; and even allow residents and businesspeople to pay for the privilege of decorating a working Village fire hydrant which will remain painted for at least 18 months. Through these diverse fund-raisers, we hope to generate sufficient funds to defray the costs of creating, maintaining and constantly updating the new website; shooting fireworks off of the Village parking garage roof on our actual anniversary; adding special bands and floats to the annual Fourth of July parade in 2017; creating a lasting memorial to the Village’s founders; and more. It is our plan and fervent hope that the residents and businesspeople of Mount Prospect will actively support our efforts by purchasing sponsorships and buying commemorative items like the residents and businesspeople of Arlington Heights did during their recent Sesquicentennial celebration. By the conclusion of 2017, we would then be able to repay the funds granted to this celebration by the Village. I want to particularly thank Acting Village Manager Dave Strahl, Finance Director Dave Erb, Public Works Director Sean Dorsey, and Public Information Officer Marianthi Thanopoulos for their valuable advice and assistance with this mammoth undertaking. We literally could not pull this off without them!
