Sister Cities Commission

I. Meeting called to Order
: Judy Thorne, Chair, called the meeting to order at
5:34 p.m.
Attendance: In addition to Judy Thorne, attendees were Mayor Arlene Juracek,
Evelyn Dorman, former Mayor Skip Farley and Janice Farley, Lorrie Huber,
Trustee A. John Korn, Judy McGinnis, Paula and Gary Randant, Diana
Sahakian, John and Mary Ann Sibrava, Robert and Pat Usnik, Barbara
VanArsdale and PIO Officer Marianthi Thanopoulos.
Absent: Patricia Fusilero, Rachel Toeppen, Steve VanArsdale, Paul Seils, and
former Mayor Irvana Wilks.
II. Approval of the Minutes
:Judy Thorne requested a correction to the minutes
of March 20, 2014. Thorne advised that she herself did not speak to John
Eilering (of Mt. Prospect State Bank) but had asked Trustee John Korn to
speak to Mr. Eilering. A Motion to Accept the Corrected Minutes was made by
Skip Farley and Seconded by Gary Randant. Motion Passed.
III. Citizens to be heard
:None.
IV. Ma Comme
: Mayor Juracek stated that the Potluck was a
wonderful event and that she liked the energy shown and asked that we
keep it up. Mayor Juracek mentioned that there would be a change to the
wine tasting venue and it would be held at Fresh Thyme Market instead of
at World Market (more discussion to follow under Committee Reports).
The Mayor also said that she would be going to Toulouse, France with
Denise Rano and her group in August. Mayor Juracek advised that there
were changes needed to the Boards and Commissions link on the Village
web site and said that the names of the members of the Commissions and
their term dates will be included along with the Chairs that are currently
shown. This should also make it easier for people to see where the
openings are on the various Commissions.
V. s Comments :
Judy Thorne advised us that a young male student from
Sèvres, a first year student at a technical university, was looking for an Internship
in Mount Prospect, perhaps at Village Hall. Thorne passed around his email. He
would need a place to live but is not asking for a salary. Mayor Juracek said that
he could possibly work on the Centennial Celebration, with the Historical Society
or with Village Manager Mike Janonis and will also discuss with Marianthi
Thanopoulos about other possibilities. Thorne suggested that various families
could house him and volunteer for a few weeks each so that he would not be at
one home for his entire stay. More discussion to follow.
VI. Illinois Sister Cities Convention
: Paula Randant spoke briefly about the
Sister Cities Convention in Urbana, Illinois and said that she has a slide show
to share with us. Randant advised that Urbana has several Sister Cities,
including one in Malawi, Africa and another in China. There was a program
showing how they had worked with the University of Illinois using a $60K grant
to change roofs and make flushing toilets for the villagers in Malawi. There
were also native Chinese dancers who performed. 35 cities sent delegates to
the Convention and about 85-
held in Naperville in April, so perhaps more people will be able to attend.
VII. a s Re port
:Skip Farley
Report as of April 30, 2014, including the costs of 2014 Event Activity, and noted
that a $24 reimbursement for Judy Thorne was not yet shown. A comparison
ure reports. Farley made
a motion to accept the Report, seconded by Bob Usnik. Motion
Passed. (Report attached).
VIII. Election of Vice Chair, Secretary, Treasurer
: Judy Thorne had compiled a
suggested slate for the Officers (Vice Chair- Gary Randant, Secretary- Evelyn
Dorman and Treasurer- Skip Farley) and asked for any other nominations from
the floor. There were none. Trustee Korn moved to Close. Paula Randant
moved to Accept. Bob Usnik seconded the motion and all attending were in
favor, no opposed- Motion Passed. Congratulations to all.
IX. Committee Reports
a. Pot Luck Dinner was held on April 24 in Village Hall at 6:30 pm. Judy
Thorne handed out the completed Event form and said that the Event was
a good one with interesting speakers and that our profit was up $150 from
last year (including a $100 donation). 71 people attended the Potluck and
Thorne thanked everyone for their help and stated that she thought this
event was appreciated by the Community and was worthwhile. Thorne said
that she had filed the full report in the file room for future events. Pat Usnik
asked if we could perhaps give the donating businesses some kind of thank
you to acknowledge their participation (such as a window cling saying
). Thorne confirmed that thank you letters
do currently go out to all donors.
b. Wine Tasting Fund Raiser Paula Randant advised that there had been
a last minute change in venue for the May 22 tasting due to a change in
ownership at World Market (bought by Bed Bath and Beyond). World
Market was very disappointed as they enjoyed hosting and had made
money in the past. There had been discussions with Judy Thorne, Mayor
Juracek and Administrative Assistant to the Village Manager Doreen
Jarosz, who had suggested Fresh Thyme Market (FT). FT was enthused
about hosting the event and will donate a gift basket and gift cards for
raffling at the Tasting and also will provide cheese and other snacks that
night. They will have 3 reds and 3 white wines and something non-
alcoholic. They will have someone available to talk about the wines and
the cheese as well. Bruce VanOverloop, Store Director at FT, hoped that
this could become a tradition and was delighted that we hold the event
twice each year. Randant said that she hoped that people were still
selling tickets and that due to the changes, all tickets would be $10
(including those sold at the door that night). John and Mary Ann Sibrava
volunteered to go to World Market that night to help direct people to the
new location. There will also be a sign posted on the door. Randant
asked that we bring any unsold tickets to the Event. People seemed to
be enthused about the change and were hoping that this would even
improve the success of the Event. Marianthi Thanopoulos will update
Facebook and our Website and asked if FT can keep a record of sales
we generate. Randant advised that FT will give a discount on wine that is
purchased that night. Judy Thorne said that she was glad it was all
working out. Thanopoulos thanked Jarosz for all the help she had
provided the Sister Cities Commission maternity
leave.
c. German Sister City Subcommittee: Members of the advisory group are:
Skip Farley (Chair), John Eilering (Mount Prospect State Bank), George
K. Busse (former chair, Board of Police and Fire Commission), Paula
Randant, (Commission member and Illinois Sister Cities president), and
Georgia Mitchell (Bosch). Skip Farley said that the Subcommittee met on
April 22 and all 5 members attended. They are still in the investigation
stage and trying to come up with possible cities. June 2 will be their next
meeting. More updates to follow.
d. Brochure: Judy Thorne advised that Irvana Wilks and Tricia Fusilero had
met and that there was still a stack of the old brochures left. Thorne
suggested that when we do print the brochures, we do so in small
batches to keep them current. Mayor Juracek said it was a good idea to
revise the brochures to make them easier to read.
e. Book Crossing: Mary Ann Sibrava reported that the Sèvres Library will
be closed for renovations until December 2014. Sibrava advised that the
list of readings had been chosen for the Book Crossing for the different
age groups and distributed the list to the attendees. There will be a
Bastille Day lobby display at the Library from July 7-14. Sibrava also
complimented Pat Usnik and Lorrie Huber for the nice job that they had
done on the Library display case.
f. Family French Festival: Mary Ann Sibrava advised that everything was
in place with Language Stars for the Event at the Library on July 9 from
6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and encouraged all of us to attend.

g. July 4Parade: Judy Thorne asked that an email be sent out before

the Parade since the next meeting would not be until after the 4.
Paula and Gary Randant will be marching and invited anyone who
can to march with them. The parade starts at 1:00 pm.
X. Open Discussion:
Evelyn Dorman advised us that she would be going to
France with her French students this summer. New Ideas for programs and
events: A list of ideas was submitted by Judy McGinnis and distributed for
discussion. Other ideas were also suggested and discussed. Due to the time
restraints, there will be more discussion at future meetings. One idea that will
be followed up on now is for a French cooking class. McGinnis volunteered to
contact Chris at Retro Bistro to see if there is any interest on their part. Diana
Sahakian said that she and Rafi Sahakian could help with the planning as
needed. Judy Thorne reminded us that our current calendar is quite full but was
open to new ideas. Some of the ideas discussed were: French cooking class,
French movie night, French Flea market, Tea, Box Lunch Auction, Bake Sale,
Talent Show, Contests between the Mayors, Sell Sister Cities tee shirts,
umbrellas, Fashion Show, French program covering LaSalle Expedition or other
topic, booth at Christkindlmarket, etc.
XI. Adjournment:
John Sibrava made a motion to adjourn, seconded by Trustee
Korn. Motion passed. Meeting adjourned at 7:08 p.m.
