Meeting call to order and attendance: 5:33 PM Chairperson Judy Thorne, Mayor Arlene Juracek, Trustee A. John Korn, Fmr. Mayor Gerald 'Skip' Farley, Janice Farley, Patricia Fusilero, Judy McGinnis, Paula Randant, Gary Randant, Rachel Toeppen, Barbara VanArsdale, Steve VanArsdale. and Executive Member Village Public Information Officer Marianthi Thanopoulos II. Approval of Prior Minutes: Approved 5:36 PM III. Citizens to be heard: <none> IV. Mayor's Comments: Mayor Arlene Juracek Mayor Juracek read a letter from the Commission Chairperson Dorothy Kucera, announcing Dorothy's retirement from the Commission, effective immediately. Mayor Juracek reported that the Mount Prospect Board of Trustees would be issuing a proclamation recognizing Ms. Kucera and her contributions to the Commission and to Mount Prospect. Mayor Juracek appointed Vice Chair Judy Thorne to chair this Commission for the interim until a new Chairperson is appointed. Mayor Juracek also announced that appointments for new Commissioners would be made at the next meeting of the Mount Prospect Board of Trustees, that nominations would be accepted at this time, and that two candidates were under consideration. V. Vice Chair Comments: Judy Thorne Vice Chair Judy Thorne graciously accepted the appointment to chair the Commission, and asked Mayor Juracek for a new copy of the final Village ordinance establishing the Sister Cities Commission. Judy led a discussion of a Commission commitment for hosting visitors to the Village from the sister city of Sevres during the period from this year until the next visit in 2017. Treasurer Report: Fmr. Mayor Gerald `Skip' Farley A comprehensive report package was distributed and a brief discussion was conducted by Chairperson Judy Thorne on specific expenses and items on the report. Judy requested that future reimbursement items on Treasurer reports include the event and reasons for the reimbursements, and she requested a final accounting on all receipts and disbursements related to the visit of the Sevres delegation in 2013. Marianthi Thanopoulos recommended a role to be established for vendor coordinator for all future Sister Cities fundraising and market activities. VII. Committee Report(s): a) 2013 Sevres Delegation Visit Sept. 14-19 Final: Paula Randant Paula provided a summary and recap of the delegation visit, and reported that the details of the visit and all the arrangements were documented in a binder with the Village Public Information Officer Marianthi Thanopoulos. b) 2014 French Market Committee Sept. 15 Final: Marianthi Thanopoulos Marianthi provided a summary recap of the 2013 French Market (attached) c) Wine Tasting Nov. 7 — Final: Paula Randant Paula provided a recap of the wine tasting event. It was noted that paid ticket sales doubled, due to the advance ticket sales at a discounted rate. The basket raffle was not as successful as prior years. It was suggested this might be improved if the raffle basket prize contained a bottle of wine. VIII. Activities: a) 2014 Trivia Night Committee: Patricia Fusilero Patricia described organizing efforts that are underway, and requested assistance with advanced ticket sales and with supervising the high school students. After discussion it was generally agreed that a discounted price of $5 per person be made available to the high school students. Tricia and Paula will collaborate on an email announcement and on -line ticket sales. It was suggested Lorrie Huber and Denise Rano be asked to lead the event, and after discussion a date was established for the event on Feb.24 2014. b) 2014 Pot Luck Dinner Committee: The Commission discussed alternatives for a program for the event. It was decided that a presentation on micro regimes within France would be sought from Brian. After discussion a date was set for April 24 2014, and it was suggested that the event be preceded by an public announcement requesting RSVP by letter or email. c) 2014 July 4 Parade Committee: After discussion it was generally agreed that the Sister Cities Commission would again walk in the Mount Prospect July 4 Parade. Paula and Gary Randant were the first Commissioners to volunteer to march. Sister Cities Subcommittee Meeting October 16, 2013 Page 3 d) 2014 French Family Festival Committee: It was suggested that Commissioner Mary Ann Sibrava be asked to coordinate this event in 2014, along with the Book Crossing events (f). e) 2014 Wine Tasting Committee: During discussion it was generally agreed that two wine tasting events would be successful, considering the support and generosity of the World Market management at Randhurst Shopping Mall. The first event is tentatively planned for May 22 2014. It was reported that a presentation by a World Market sommelier would be a welcome addition to the event. f) Book Crossing and Library Committee: It was suggested that Commissioner Mary Ann Sibrava be asked to coordinate these events in 2014. VII. New Business & Ideas a) German Sister City Sub - Committee: Mayor Arlene Juracek It was discussed that an exploration effort is beginning to find and arrange candidate towns in Germany for a second Sister City to Mount Prospect. Former Mayor Skip Farley Commissioner Janice Farley will assist to coordinate the effort, and Commissioner Paula Randant will assist within her role as the current President of the Illinois Sister Cities Association.
