Mayor's Report 10/01/2013 PROCLAMATION ON THE OCCASION OF THE CELEBRATION OF DURGA PUJA OCTOBER 9-13, 2013 WHEREAS, the Village of Mount Prospect has on several occasions issued proclamations in memory of the victims and survivors of the Holocaust, the state-sponsored, systematic persecution and annihilation of European Jewry by Nazi Germany and its collaborators between 1933 and 1945, and in memory of the rescuers and liberators of its victims; and WHEREAS, the issuance of those proclamations has afforded an opportunity to reflect on the moral responsibilities of individuals, societies, and governments; and to actively rededicate ourselves to the principles of individual freedom in a just society; and WHEREAS, we the people of the Village of Mount Prospect have proclaimed to always remember the terrible events of the Holocaust and remain vigilant against hatred, persecution and tyranny; and WHEREAS, we the citizens of Mount Prospect have proclaimed that we should work to promote human dignity and confront hate whenever and wherever it occurs; and WHEREAS, the Hindu feast of Durga Puja being celebrated this year on October 9-13, affords us an opportunity to reaffirm and rededicate ourselves to these principles, by recognizing that anti-minority and anti-Hindu laws such as the Vested Property Act enacted in Bangladesh prevent many Hindus from celebrating Durga Puja, which recognizes the triumph of Good over Evil; and WHEREAS, scant attention is being paid to the plight of Bangladeshi Hindus who live each day in fear of atrocities being committed against them for their religious beliefs. NOW THEREFORE, I, Arlene A. Juracek, Mayor of the Village of Mount Prospect hereby declare October 9-13, 2013, as AND RE- in memory and recognition of all victims of violations of human rights, past and present. I further proclaim the Village of Mou and our encouragement of efforts to stop such persecution; and I affirm our recognition that the lack of notoriety given to any particular human rights violations does not make them any less abhorrent. _______________________ Arlene A. Lisa Angell Village Clerk Dated this ___day of October 2013 P R O C L A M A T I O N OCTOBER 2013 th WHEREAS October, 2013 is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and October 18 is National Mammography Day; and WHEREAS, breast cancer is the most common cancer site, and the second deadliest cancer among women; and WHEREAS and the chance of dying from breast cancer is 1 in 35; and WHEREAS, it is estimated that in 2013 over 230,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 39,500 will die; and WHEREAS, in 2013 it is estimated that among men, there will be over 2,200 new cases of breast cancer and over 400 breast cancer deaths; and WHEREAS, research has shown that taking advantage of early detection methods such as mammography and clinical breast exams could help drop the cancer rate by as much as 30 percent; and WHEREAS, death rates from breast cancer have been declining, and this change is believed to be the result of earlier detection and improved treatment; and WHEREAS, mammography - -- is recognized as the single most effective method of detecting breast changes that may be cancer long before physical symptoms can be seen or felt. NOW, THEREFORE I ,, Arlene A. Lisa Angell Village Clerk Dated this 1st day of October 2013 P R O C L A M A T I O N OCTOBER 6 12, 2013  WHEREAS , Mount Prospect is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those living in and visiting our community; and WHEREAS , fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally, and homes are where people are at greatest risk from fire; and WHEREAS , roughly 3,000 people die as a result of fires and burns, and more than 200,000 and WHEREAS , cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries, while heating equipment and smoking are the leading causes of home fire deaths; and WHEREAS , Mount Prospect residents are responsive to public education measures and are able to take personal steps to increase their safety from fire; and WHEREAS , residents who have planned and practiced a home fire escape plan are more prepared and will be more likely to survive a fire; and WHEREAS , the Mount Prospect Fire Department is dedicated to reducing the occurrence of home fires and home fire injuries through prevention, protection, and public education; and WHEREAS , the 2013 Fire Prevention Week theme; Prevent Kitchen Fireseffectively serves to remind us all of the simple actions we can take to stay safer from fire during Fire Prevention Week and year round.
