Mayor's Report 09/03/2013 VILLAGE OF MOUNT PROSPECT FIRE DEPARTMENT 100 YEAR ANNIVERSARY 1913 2013 WHEREAS, fighting fires is one of the most hazardous professions, requiring physical strength, stamina, extensive training, courage and selfless concern for the welfare of our citizens; and WHEREAS, the MOUNT PROSPECT VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT was formed by an organized group of community leaders on September 29,1913; and WHEREAS, on November 14, 1914 C. D. Busse was elected the first Fire Chief; and WHEREAS, in 1917 Mount Prospect became a legally organized and incorporated Village and implemented a subscription system to provide funds for firefighting equipment; and WHEREAS, in 1936, with the assistance of Fire Chief Frank Biermann, the Mount Prospect Rural Fire League was organized to protect the outlying rural areas of the Village of Mount Prospect; and WHEREAS, in 1956, Edwin Haberkamp was hired as the first full-time Fire Chief and in 1960 two (2) full-time firefighters were hired by the MOUNT PROSPECT FIRE DEPARTMENT; and WHEREAS, from the beginning, the emphasis of dedication and community service played an underlying qualification to be a member of the MOUNT PROSPECT FIRE DEPARTMENT; and WHEREAS, this tradition has been carried forward to the current high standards in providing quality services to the community; and WHEREAS, in 1964 the MOUNT PROSPECT FIRE DEPARTMENT Station No. 2 was built at 1601 West Golf Road; the new Public Safety Building at 112 East Northwest Highway was dedicated in 1993 and in 2010 the newly rebuilt MOUNT PROSPECT FIRE DEPARTMENT Station No. 3 at 2000 East Kensington Road received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental; (LEED) Gold designation; and WHEREAS, in 1970 the MOUNT PROSPECT FIRE DEPARTMENT in cooperation with neighboring Fire Departments formed Division One of the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS); and WHEREAS, in 1971 the MOUNT PROSPECT FIRE DEPARTMENT took over fire protection for the Forest River Fire Protection District for the area annexed into the Village of Mount Prospect; and WHEREAS, Dr. Zydlo and Northwest Community Hospital implemented one of the first paramedic programs in the United States in 1972; since that time the residents of Mount Prospect have benefitted from the services provided by the MOUNT PROSPECT FIRE DEPARTMENT; and WHEREAS, the MOUNT PROSPECT FIRE DEPARTMENT formed specialized rescue teams to perform water and technical rescues and manage hazardous materials incidents. WHEREAS, under the direction of Fire Chief John J. Malcolm, the fifth full-time fire chief, the MOUNT PROSPECT FIRE DEPARTMENT celebrates its 100 years of service on SEPTEMBER 29, 2013. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Arlene A. Juracek, Mayor of the Village of Mount Prospect, do hereby proclaim Sunday, September 29, 2013, as the ANNIVERSARY OF THE in the Village of Mount Prospect and I urge all citizens to join in recognizing the proud history, traditions and community involvement of the MOUNT PROSPECT FIRE DEPARTMENT. _________________________________ Arlene A.
