Minutes: January 21, 2010

L The meeting was called to order by Dorothy at 5:35 PM.
II. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.
REPORTS:
III. The Treasurer's report was presented for review and Dorothy noted that the Village
allocated the Sister Cities Commission $2000.00 for the fiscal year.
IV. A book discussion and review project with MP and Sevres was discussed. Mary Ann
Sibrava and Irvana Wilks have been working on book suggestions and how it would
proceed. Mary Ann has been talking to Library staff for suggestions on the book
selections. Irvana has been talking with the Library staff and other techie people
about possibly doing a real time discussion between towns with the Library
facilitating the website and necessary technology. It was also noted that the Library
would make multiple copies of books chosen available for reading. Dates of this
project were discussed. Fall 2010 possible in conjunction with French week in
November was discussed.
V. Young Authors and Young Artists contest was discussed. Denise Rano has been
facilitating this project. She contacted Prospect and Lincoln Middle School. There
is an essay contest and an art contest. For the Art submission there is a $50. Fee.
For the essay contest there is a $5 per submission fee.
Dorothy, Judy and Denise discussed possible ways to display the winners and
discussed how this might be done in conjunction with Mount Prospect Sister Cities
Commission 10 Anniversary Celebration this year. Discussion to continue.
Denise will follow up on the contest. She will contact Lincoln, Prospect, Hersey,
Elk Grove, Rolling Meadows, River Trails, Holmes, St.Raymond's, St. Paul and St.
Emily schools for possible entrants. All these schools will be given the opportunity
to participate in the essay contest and high school students only for the art contest.
March 15, 2010 is the date entries are due for submission.
Note this date is before out next meeting.
VI. The quilting group from Sevres that Rachel Toeppen and the Historical Society are
facilitating will have 6 quilters and 2 husbands in the group. They will arrive 4/12/10
and depart 4/18/10. Rachel and the Historical Society are working on a schedule.
There will be a display of quilts at the Mount Prospect museum 4/14 -18. On Friday they
will attend a Quilt Show at Rosemont and on Saturday go to the Art Institute in Chicago.
Housing has been taken care of by the hosting group.
There was discussion of the role that the Sister Cities Commission should play in this
kind of informal cultural exchange. Members agreed that the role would be kept
informal and that commission members who wished to provide and participate in a small
welcoming reception would do so at their own discretion.
VII. The Community trip to France was discussed. Denise Rano is facilitating Commission
coordination of this trip with District 214 Travel. The estimated cost of the trip per
person is $3300.00. There was some discussion of hope to include a tour of Sevres and
possibly a trip to Normandy. More to follow.
VIII. The Sister Cities Commission Convention 4/3/10 in Carbondale was discussed.
IX. A pot luck Dinner for the Quilting group to meet the community was discussed. Lorrie
Huber will chair the event. Paula, Judy and Rachel will help. There was discussion of a
raffle to fiind raise for the event and other commission activities. Thursday April 15 will
be the date of the Pot Luck.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:50 PM. The next meeting will be March 18, 2010.
