MAYORS REPORT 9/3/02PR 0 CLAMA TION "UNITED WAY MONTH" SEPTEMBER 2002 WHEREAS, the United F/ay of Mount Prospect and Prospect Heights has been serving the Village of Mount Prospect for over 20 years; and WHEREAS, United F/ay is a volunteer based organization that keeps fundraising cost minimal, with 87cents of every dollar going directly to fund local human care services; and WHEREAS, the generosity and support of ail individuals living and working in our community, who believe United F/ay is the best way to help individuals in need, have raised millions of dollars to provide critical human care services in our community; and WHERE,4S, this year, United F/ay of Mount Prospect and Prospect Heights will allocate funds of approximately $200,000 to 22 local agencies based on the needs of the community to help people in need; and WHEREAS, United Way funds are used to provide affordable day care, services for the elderly, mental health services, counseling for families and youth, help for abused women and children, basic shelter and food, job counseling, shelter for the homeless and disabled, and emergency care for children and teens; and WHEREAS, the United F/ay of Mount Prospect and Prospect Heights reflects the strong commitment of the residents, businesses, community leaders, educators and service personnel to work together to help neighbors in need. NOW, THEREFORE, I, GeraM L. Farley, Mayor of the Village of Mount Prospect, do hereby proclaim September 2002 as "UNITED WA Y MONTH" in the Village of Mount Prospect, and I urge all residents to recognize the efforts of the local United F/ay organization and to realize that the United F/ay of Mount Prospect and Prospect Heights exemplifies the generous spirit of our community. PROCLAMATION "PR OS TA TE CANCER AWARENESS MONTH" WHEREAS, in the year 2002, the month of September is declared Prostate Cancer Awareness Month; and WHEREAS, in the year 2002, approximately 189,000 men in the United States will learn that they have prostate cancer and, across the nation, prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed non-skin cancer in men; and WHEREAS, approximately 30, 000 men will lose their lives to this disease this year, and one in six men in the nation are at risk of developing prostate cancer during their lifetimes; and WHEREAS, about 25percent of prostate cancer occurs in men under the age of 65, during their~prime years at work, and can devastate families through loss of income, partnership and support; and WHEREAS, prostate cancer has accounted, on average, for 15percent of the nation's cancer burden and 15 percent of male cancer deaths; and WHEREAS, research suggests that men would reduce their risk of prostate cancer mortality if they followed recommended prostate cancer screening guidelines, including examination by a health care provider. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gerald L. Farley, Mayor of the Village of Mount Prospect, do hereby proclaim the month of September as "PROSTATE CANCER AWARENESS MONTH" in the Village of Mount Prospect, and urge all men in the Village of Mount Prospect to become aware of their own risks of prostate cancer, talk to their health care providers about prostate cancer, and whenever appropriate, get screened for the disease. RESOLUTION NO. 43-02 "A DAY OF REMEMBRANCE" SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 WHEREAS, the unprovoked attacks of September 11, 2001 upon America, by foreign terrorists have thrust the United States, and other countries, into a war it never envisioned, militarily or diplomatically; and ItfflEREAS, the challenges facing all the civilized people of the world as they relate to the war on terrorism will not end until those responsible are brought to justice; and WttEREAS, America is fully committed through Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Noble Eagle to ensure our freedoms remain unfettered and sovereign for all generations, now and forever; and WHEREAS, world opinion needs to remain focused upon these inhuman acts perpetrated around the globe to ensure they are never repeated; and WHEREAS, one way to accomplish this is to NEVER FORGET that those innocent victims did not die in vain; and WHEREAS, America can fight back by reminding the world that the deaths of these people will always be remembered and they will be forever loved; and R/fIEREAS, a noble and appropriate way to accomplish this is through the annual celebration of their living; and V~I:IEREAS, this commemoration should be held each September 11 throughout the land to include: · Thepromotion ofglobalpeace andgoodwill; · The demous~ration of America's resolve andperseverance to win the war on terrorism; · The advancement of responsible citizenship; · The encouragement of patriotism and love of country; and · The poignant remembrance of those innocent victims that died on September 11, as heroes, one and all; and IVttEREAS, Mount Prospect will commemorate and remember the events of September 11, 2001 in a number of ways throughout the community including a remembrance ceremony to take place on Wednesday, September 11, 2002 at 7:00p.m. at the Veterans' Memorial Band Shell at Lions Park; and WttEREAS, we ask residents and businesses in the community toffy the flag on September 11 as a reminder of the freedom that we cherish and as a sign of solidarity and support for our country; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE VILLAGE OF MOUNT PROSPECT, COOK COUNt, ILLINOIS: SECTION ONE: That this Resolution is hereby approved to memorialize those men, women, and children who lost their lives. SECTION TWO: That this Resolution shall be publicized for all to see and know that the citizens of Mount Prospect remember with eternal respect those whose lives were suddenly, without cause, and pointlessly taken from them on September 11, 2001, and those who willingly and sacrificially offered themselves and their services on behalf of the victims and their families; may they forever rest in peace and abide in our memories.
