"DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH"
OCTOBER 2012
WHEREAS, violence against women and children continues to become a more prevalent
problem in the Northwest Suburbs; and
WHEREAS, the problems of domestic violence affects all citizens of Illinois and are not
confined to any group of people, but cross all economic, gender, racial and societal barriers and
are supported by societal indifference; and
WHEREAS, the crime of domestic violence violates an individual's privacy, dignity, security and
humanity through the systematic use of physical, emotional, sexual, psychological and
economic control and /or abuse; and
WHEREAS, the impact of domestic violence is wide - ranging, directly affecting families, children
and society as a whole; and
WHEREAS, 45,784 orders of protection were written in Cook County, Illinois in 2011; and
WHEREAS, domestic violence affects one out of four families. The cost to society and
businesses is consequential, resulting in healthcare related costs of $4 billion dollars annually.
U.S. Companies forfeit close to $700 million in lostwages, sick time and lower productivity; and
WHEREAS, local educational information and resources are available by visiting the
www.endallabuse.org Web site; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting to set aside a special time to bring this issue to the attention of all
residents of the Village of Mount Prospect so they can become better informed and involved in
local programs to end the cycle of violence.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Irvana K. Wilks, Mayor of the Village of Mount Prospect, do hereby
proclaim the month of October 2012 as
"DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH"
in the Village of Mount Prospect, and I encourage our residents to join forces with the
Northwest Suburban Alliance on Domestic Violence, law enforcement, social service
organizations and concerned citizens across the country to raise the public awareness of
domestic violence issues.
