HomeMy WebLinkAboutRes 35-87 12/01/1987 RESOLUTION NO. 35-87 A RESOLUTION IN OPPOSITION TO THE PROPOSED STEEPLECHASE MIXED-USE DEVELOPMENT IN ARLINGTON HEIGHTS FOR REASONS OF FLOOD CONTROL ---^--- WHEREAS, the residents of the Northwest Suburbs, including Mount Prospect and Arlington Heights, have experienced severe flooding as a result of the over- development of the remaining open space in the Northwest Suburbs; and WHEREAS, the ViHage of Mount Prospect is seeking methods to reduce the threat of future flooding in this and other communities so as to protect and preserve existing properties while at the same time fostering thoughtful and reasoned economic development in the area; and WHEREAS, through careful planning, the potential for future flooding can be reduced; and WHEREAS, the most apparent method of flood control is to restrict building in known flood plain areas; and WHEREAS, the Village of Arlington Heights is currently considering a request to construct a mixed-use development consisting of an office/service center and multi-family dwelling units to be known as Steeplechase on land adjacent to the corporate boundaries of the Village of Mount Prospect~ with portions of said land being located in a known flood-plain area; and WHEREAS, the development, as proposed~ does not adequately address the very real potential for increased flooding in this area; which area has experienced severe flooding as recently as the summer of 1987. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE VILLAGE OF MOUNT PROSPECT, COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS: SECTION ONE: The Mayor and Board of Trustees of the ViHage of Mount Prospect do hereby express their opposition to the development known as Steeplechase inasmuch as the proposed development is located in a known flood plain area and wiH~ therefore, have an adverse effect on adjacent properties in the form of the increased potential for flooding and the resulting destruction of property that is likely to occur. SECTION TWO: That the Mayor and Board of Trustees of the Village of Mount Prospect do hereby encourage the corporate officials of the Village of Arlington Heights to reject the proposed development known as Steeplechase for the above- stated reasons. SECTION THREE: That the Mayor and Board of Trustees of the Village of MoLint Prospect do hereby request that the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers refuse to issue the necessary permits to allow construction in a known flood plain area that has experienced severe flooding in the recent past. SECTION FOUR: That the Mayor and Board of Trustees of the ViHage of MoLint Prospect do he reby request the assistance and the cooperation of both the ViHage of Arlington Heights and the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers in ensuring that the ultimate use of the subject property and the flood plain contained therein shaH be to the benefit of both communities rather than becoming another potential source of flooding.
