MAYORS REPORT 10/19/04 PROCLAMA TION {¡NATIONAL BREAST CANCER A WARENESS MONTH" October, 2004 WHEREAS, October, 2004 begins the 20th year for the observance of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month; and WHEREAS, since the program began in 1985, mammography use has doubled for women age 50 and older, and breast cancer deaths have declined; and WHEREAS, within the United States, one out of every seven women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime so the mantra "Early Detection Saves Lives, " is so very important to both men and women; and WHEREAS, mammography screening is the single most effective method of detecting breast changes that may be cancer, long before physical symptoms can be seen or felt; and WHEREAS, with early detection of breast cancer, it is less likely a woman will need highly invasive treatments, and the more likely she will survive the disease; and WHEREAS, today there are more than two million breast cancer survivors in the United States, due in part to early detection. NOw, THEREFORE, /, Gerald L. Farley, Mayor of the Village of Mount Prospect, do hereby proclaim the month of October, 2004 as UNA TIONAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH" in the Village of Mount Prospect, and I encourage our citizens to participate in this observance and remember "Early Detection Saves Lives.
