JANUARY 17, 2002
MEETING MINUTES

CALL TO ORDER
Chairman Luteri called the meeting to order at 7:35 p.m.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
There were no minutes to be approved.
CITIZEN FORUM
Mr. Dave Schein asked several questions about curbside recycling. He was primarily interested in the
current collection methods, and if there was anything he could do to assist the driver collecting the
recyclab[es, i.e, materials and separation, Mr. Schein is also coordinating a Neighborhood Watch
meeting and asked for information to share about the Village's solid waste program at the meeting.
SOLID WASTE PROGRAMS AND DATA
Chairman Luterri recapped a conversation he recently had with a Des Plaines resident about the Village's
solid waste program. This individual had stated that ~everal of her Mount Prospect friends transport their
garbage, in their cars, to her home in Des Plaines because she has unlimited refuse collection.
Chairman Luted explained the Village's solid waste program to this individual and pointed out the
differences between the Village's approach to solid waste management and Des Plaines.' Apparently
she was also unaware that residential solid waste services in Mount Prospect are paid through the
property taxes. Chairman Luted encouraged her as well as her friends to attend the Commission
meeting to discuss the program.
The Solid Waste Commission was surprised to learn that resident s would transport their garbage to
another community rather than taking responsibility for the waste they generated. However, they didn't
think this type of behavior was typical and that most residents do not routinely require service in excess of
the basic service level.
The Commission reviewed the solid waste data from November and December. In response to a
question as to whether the downturn in the economy had impacted the amount of waste generated, the
Coordinator stated there had been no significant reduction.

The Coordinator reported that the Public Works Department will submit an application for the Village to
participate in the Partners for Clean Air Campaign. This prompted a brief discussion on the recent U.S.
EPA fine imposed on a local business.
NEXT MEETING
The next meeting was scheduled for Thursday, March 21 in the Public Works Facility, 1700 West Central
Road at 7:30 p.m.
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 8:30 p.m.
