Northwest Highway Mount Prospect, Illinois 6005E BOARD OF FIRE AND POLICE COMMISSIONERS MINUTES May 2, 2011 Public Safety Building Fire Department Conference Room Chairman Busse called the meeting to order at 6:04 p.m. Roll Call: George Busse, Chairman Charles Bennett, Commissioner Hank Friedrichs III, Commissioner James Powers, Commissioner Michaele Skowron, Commissioner Also Present: Chris Truty, Deputy Fire Chief John Dahlberg, Chief of Police Phone 847/870 -5656 APPROVAL OF MINUTES A motion was made by Commissioner Skowron and seconded by Commissioner Friedrichs to accept the minutes of the March 14, 2011, Open Meeting. Voice Vote: Ayes: Busse, Friedrichs, Skowron Nays: None Abstain: Bennett, Powers Motion Carried CITIZENS TO BE HEARD No one in attendance. POLICE DEPARTMENT UPDATE Chief Dahlberg reported the department is at the authorized strength of 82 sworn, which includes the newest officer currently at the academy. Chief Dahlberg discussed personnel staffing levels and recent manpower constraints the department is experiencing. The Chief also provided a brief report on the opening of the Randhurst theatre Friday night and made the Board aware that the department is committed to helping Randhurst maintain an atmosphere that is conducive to families by maintaining as high a visible presence as possible. The Chief also provided a brief update on current crime statistics and discussion followed. The police department sergeants test resulted in 23 applications, which is the highest number of applications since 1988. The written test is scheduled for July 20 and the assessment center will be held on August 17 Chief Dahlberg reminded the commissioners of the upcoming dates for police officer testing. As of tonight, the department has received 310 applications. FIRE DEPARTMENT UPDATE Deputy Chief Truty distributed to the Board members copies of the 2010 Fire Department Annual Report. He also provided an update on current legislation in Springfield regarding the hiring process for firefighters and there was a brief discussion. CLOSED SESSION A motion was made by Commissioner Bennett and seconded by Commissioner Powers to go into Closed Session under personnel 5 ILCS 120/2 (c)(1) at 6:12 p.m. Roll Call Vote: Ayes: Bennett, Busse, Friedrichs, Powers, Skowron Nays: None Motion Carried BOFPC Minutes 5/2/11 Page 1 The Board returned to Open Session at 6:13 p.m. with everyone present. OTHER BUSINESS Chief Dahlberg discussed the timeline for scheduling oral interviews, which will be dependent on the midyear budget review. There was a discussion regarding the midyear budget meetings and members of the BOFPC expressed interest in attending a meeting.
