Lowc Phone: 847/818-5328 Fax: 847/818-5329 TDD: 847/392-6064 MINUTES COFFEE WITH COUNCIL Saturday, February 10, 2001, 9:00 a.m. 2nd Floor Conference Room, Village Hall The meeting was convened at 9:00 a.m. Those present were Trustees Timothy Corcoran, Rick Lohrstorfer, Dennis Prikkel and Irvana Wilks. Representing staff were Assistant Village Manager David Strahl and Community Development Director William Cooney. Na Wa Ta Ave. Mount Prospect Youth Commission: Trustee Lohrstorfer indicated that several members of the Youth Commission were in attendance this morning to discuss the proposed Community Center. He indicated that the Commission was conducting a field trip later in the day to surrounding communities to view the types of facilities that these communities have for youth and other groups in the Village. Nicole Byrne, Cbairperson of the Youth Commission, indicated that the Youth Commission was very interested in the concept of creating a community center where individuals of all ages could participate in various events. She indicated that the Commission felt that an overall community center would be more beneficial than separate senior and yonth centers. She stated that many of her classmates would benefit from working with seniors and socializing with them. She indicated that many students, especially sixth-graders through sophomores in high school, are looking for places to go and that they would enjoy sharing such space with seniors. Other members of the Commission stated they agreed with Ms. Byrne. There was much discussion regarding the pros and cons of creating shared space for youth and seniors. The Village Board members suggested that the Youth Commission migh~ want to approach the Senior Advisory Committee to further investigate the combination of the two centers. There was also much discussion on how the different activities would be coordinated between tile two groups. In addition, a discussion about the merit of having the senior aud/or youth activities located in a Village Hall vs. in a separate location. Tile Village Board did request that tile Yo~tth Commission members provide feedback from their visit to other communities and that they continue to be active itl the discussion regarding the proposed Village Hall/Commnnity Cente~' Carol Tortorello, 223 S. Ehnhurst Ave.: Ms. q'orn, orello raised the issue of the upccm~mg departures of Montgomery Ward and J.C Penney at Randhurst. Mr. Coonc3 offee With Council ~ February 10, 2001 Meeting Minutes Page 2 indicated that the Mayor and staff would be meeting with representatives from Rouse the first week of March to fully evaluate the situation. He shared Ms. TortoreIlo's concerns but indicated that he felt that in the long term that the departure of Ward's and Penney's may be a positive change for the center. The Village Board generally discussed the current retail climate and the number of national retailers that were filing for bankruptcy. In addition, there was discussion regarding what the Village's role should be in recruiting new businesses to the Village.
