HomeMy WebLinkAbout02/04/2010 CRC minutes MINUTES COMMUNITY RELATIONS COMMISSION Community Center, Village Hall Thursday, February 4, 2010 The Community Relations Commission (CRC) of the Village of Mount Prospect met Thursday, February 4, 2010, at Mount Prospect Village Hall located at 50 South Emerson Street, Mount Prospect, Illinois. I. CALL TO ORDER Chairman Tolbert called the meeting to order at 7:18 p.m. II. ROLL CALL Present: Chairman Tolbert Vice Chairman Parikh Comm issioner Schmalzer Absent: Commissioner Muench Commissioner Ortiz Also in Attendance: Michael Semkiu, Deputy Chief of Police III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES A motion was made by Commissioner Parikh and seconded by Commissioner Schmalzer to approve the minutes of the December 3, 2009, meeting. The minutes were unanimously approved by a voice vote. IV. OLD BUSINESS Dr. Martin Luther King Dinner The Village did not purchase a table for the Dr. Martin Luther King dinner this year due to budget constraints. Discussion of Commission Goals Commissioner Parikh recommended the commission table the discussion of goals to the next meeting. Community Connections Center Commissioner Schmalzer visited the Community Connections Center (CCC) a few weeks ago and was very impressed with the staff. Chairman Tolbert discussed his recent visit to the CCC for a Partner Meeting and how impressed he was with the library operation. The Chairman suggested holding the April Community Relations Commission meeting at the Community Connections Center on a Tuesday or Thursday at 7:00 p.m., depending on the center's hours. Chairman Tolbert would like to have the commission involved in a project. The type of project would depend on available budget funds. Commissioner Parikh would like to see a meeting allowing members of the community to attend and provide feedback on what projects or events they feel are needed. Mr. Schmalzer suggested possibly holding a coat or clothing drive at the Community Connections Center or assisting the Human Services Department with the food drive. Mr. Parikh would also like to have a joint meeting with the Interfaith Council which meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month. Chairman Tolbert and Commissioner Muench are members already. NEW BUSINESS Proclamation At the February 2, 2010 Village Board Meeting, Mayor Wilks presented the "Black History Month Proclamation" to Chairman Tolbert. The Proclamation will be entered into the Commission archives. Suburban Mosaic Book Program Chairman Tolbert reported at last meeting of the Suburban Mosaic Book Program, the following books were selected: Preschool — K Golden Rule by Ilene Cooper (May 2007) or How to Heal a Broken Wing by Bob Graham (August 2008) K — 3: Listen to the Wind by Greg Mortensen (January 2009) 4 — 5 Notes from the Dog by Gary Paulsen (July 2009) 6 — 8 Back Home by Julie Keller (September 2009) High School The Carbon Diaries, 2015 by Saci Lloyd (February 2009) Adult The Help by Kathryn Stockett (February 2009) VI. CORRESPONDENCE No report. VII, ADJOURNMENT The meeting adjourned at 8:05 p.m. after a motion was made by Chairman Tolbert and seconded by Commissioner Parikh. The motion was approved unanimously.
