RESOLUTION OF THE PRESIDENT AND BOARD OF
TRUST8ES OF THE VILLAGE OF MOUNT PROSPECT
CONCERNING SIDE'.'JALK S:PECIFICArrrONS
\~rtEREAS, Section 9.104 of the Municinal Code of Mount
Prospect of 1957, as amended, provides in part that all
sidewalk pavement shall be made in conformity with speci-
fications laid down from time to time by the President
and Board of Trustees,
NOW, 'rHEREFOllE:, BE IT RESOLVED by the President and
Board of Trustees of the Village of Mount Prospect, Cook
County, Illinois:
SPECIFICATIONS FOR
INSTALLA'rION OF PUBLIC SIDEWALK IN THE
VILLAGE OF MOUNT PROSPECT
All labor, material, equipment and tools necessary
for the construction of all concrete sidewalks shall be
furnished and placed in compliance with the following
specifications:
All walks constructed in front of and siding resi-
dentially zoned property shall be five (5) feet in
width and five (5) inches in thickness. Walks con-
structed in front of and siding business or industrially
zoned property shall be six (6) feet in width and five
(5) inches in thickness. Location of walks shall be
one (1) foot streetward from the right-of-way line,
unless otherwise authorized by the President and Board
of Trustees of the Village of Mount Prospect where the
abutting property owner would suffer undue hardship
and the installation of such other type sidewalk will
not be injurious to the public safety.
The standard grade for sidewalk shall be five (5)
inches above the curb in streets where curb is existing.
Where conditions require, this standard may be modified
as directed by the Village Inspector. Where no curb
exists, the grade shall be established by the Village.
No sidewalk shall be installed when the temperature
is 450 or lower or when the United States Weather Bureau
forecasts a temperature of less than L~oo within 48 hours
after pouring concrete.

All work and materials used shall be inspected by the
Village Inspector and the finished sidewalk shall be sub-
ject to inspection and acceptance by the Village prior to
authorizing payment to the Contractor.
Concrete shall be plant or transit mixed and shall
contain not less than five bags of cement per cubic yard
of concrete. Cement, sand, and course aggregate shall be
mixed in the proportion of 1:3:5. Water content shall be
sufficient only to permit proper placing and finishing.
All concrete used shall be subject to satisfactory inspec-
tion by the Village Inspector.
During excavation, all unsuitable material such as
black dirt, broken concrete, spoil or any other material
deemed unsatisfactory by the Inspector shall be removed
from the sidewalk area and a satisfactory subgrade
established.. Fill under sidewalks shall consist of sand
or gravel, satisfactory to the Inspector.
The subgrade shall be tamped or rolled until trlOroughly
compacted; shall be constructed true to line, grade and
cross section for the bottom of the sidewalk or sidewalk
apron; and shall be prepared sufficiently wide to accommo-
date the forms.
Embankments prepared for walk construction shall be
not less than six (6) inches wider on each side than the
width of the walk to be installed.
Side forms shall be lumber with a nominal thickness
of two (2) inches, or of steel of equal rigidity. They
shall be held securely in place by stakes or braces, with
the top edges true to line and grade. The forms for
street sidewalks shall be so set that the slab will have
a fall of one (1) inch vertical to four (4) feet horizontal,
from the edge nearest the property line toward the edge
farthest from the property line. Forms for the sidewalk
aprons shall be so set that the slab will have a uniform
fall between the sidewalk proper and the curb grade. Forms
shall be of a depth equivalent to or greater than the
thickness of the walk.
The sub-grade or sub-base shall be adequately moistened
just before the concrete is placed. The concrete shall be
placed in successive batches for the entire width of the
slab, tamped until all voids are removed and free mortar
appears on the surface, thoroughly spaded along the edges,
struck off to the true grade, and finished to a true and
even surface with suitable trowels and floats. The surface
shall be divided by grooves constructed at right angles to
the centerline of the sidewalk. These grooves shall extend
to one-quarter (1/4) the depth of the sidewalk; shall be
not less than 1/8 inch or more than 1/4 inch in width; and
shall have the edge rounded 1/4 inch. No slab shall be
longer than six (6) feet or less than four (4) feet unless
otherwise approved by the Inspector. The side edges of the

one-fourth (1/4) inch radius. The finished sidewalk shall
be finally dragged across its width with a brush or the
surface otherwise roughened by approved methods to give a
non-skid finish.
Expansion joints one-half (1/2) inch thick shall be
placed at intervals of about fifty (50) feet in the side-
walks at locations designated by the Village Engineer.
Expansion joints one-half (1/2) inch thick shall be
provided between the sidewalk and all structures, such as
light standards, traffic light standards, traffic poles,
etc., which extend through the sidewalk.
Expansion joints one (1) inch thick shall be placed
wherever sidewalks abut against concrete driveways,
concrete pavements, concrete curbs and/or concrete walks.
Sidewalk shall be properly barricaded and lighted
after finishing and shall be covered with tarpaulin or
protective paper in case of threatening weather.
After removal of forms, the space alongside the side-
walk shall be filled with topsoil and leveled to present
a finished appearance.
