MAYOR'S REPORT 02/02/2010 PROCLAMA TION "BLACK HISTORY MONTH" FEBRUARY, 2010 WHEREAS, during National African American History Month, we honor the achievements and celebrate the rich heritage of African Americans; and WHEREAS, in 1926 Carter G. Woodson initiated Negro History Week, which, in 1976, was expanded to the entire month of February to recognize and celebrate contributions of African-Americans to our nation's culture and history; and WHEREAS, throughout our Nation's History, African Americans from all walks of life have offered their talents to the betterment of American Society. Through their extraordinary accomplishments, these leaders helped bring our Nation closer to fulfilling its founding ideas; and. WHEREAS, throughout African American History Month, we celebrate the many contributions African Americans have made to our Nation, and we are reminded of their courage in their struggle to change the hearts and minds of our citizens; and WHEREAS, since the Emancipation Proclamation was written by Abraham Lincoln 146 years ago, much progress toward racial equality has been made, yet, we must continue to work as one to achieve the promise and vision of our great Nation. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Irvana K. Wilks, Mayor of the Village of Mount Prospect, do hereby proclaim February, 2010 as "BLACK HISTORY MONTH" and 1 encourage all individuals to take advantage of opportunities to educate themselves and raise awareness and appreciation of the history and contributions of African-Americans to our great nation, while striving to eliminate even the most minute evidence of discrimination towards all individuals. The Committee made the following selections: "Officer of the Year" - Tactical Officer Anthony Lietzow #239 Runner-Up - Officer Michael Angarola #263 Runner-Up - Detective Mark Recker #169 Runner-Up - Officer Richard LaBarbera #254 Runner-Up - Officer Alison Teevan #253 Their awards presentation has been tentatively set for the Village Board meeting on Tuesday, 02 February 2010 at 7:00 p.m. I am inviting all employees of the department to attend the meeting to offer congratulations and support to your fellow officers. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate each of these officers on their accomplishments during the past year. These officers by word and deed have set the standard for all of us.
