PROCLAMA TION
UBLACK HISTORY MONTH"
FEBRUARY, 2009
WHEREAS, during National African History Month, we honor the achievements and
celebrate the rich heritage of African Americans; and
WHEREAS, in 1926 Carter G. Woodson initiated Negro History Week, which, in 1976, was
expanded to the entire month of February to recognize and celebrate contributions of African-
Americans to our nation's culture and history,' and
WHEREAS, throughout our Nation's History, African Americansfrom all walks of life have
offered their talents to the betterment of American Society. Through their extraordinary
accomplishments, these leaders helped bring our Nation closer to fulfilling itsfounding ideas.
WHEREAS, throughout African American History Month, we the celebrate the many
contributions African Americans have made to our Nation, and we are reminded of their
courage in their struggle to change the hearts and minds of our citizens.
WHEREAS, the recent election of our nation's first black president demonstrates how far
racial equality has advanced since the Emancipation Proclamation was written by Abraham
Lincoln 146 years ago. And, while much progress has been made, we must continue to work
together to achieve the promise and vision of our great Nation.
NOW, THEREFORE, 1, Irvana K. Wilks, Mayor of the Village of Mount Prospect, do hereby
proclaim February, 2009 as
UBLACK HISTORY MONTH"
and 1 encourage all individuals to take advantage of opportunities to educate themselves and
raise awareness and appreciation of the history and contributions of African-Americans to
our great nation, while striving to eliminate even the most minute evidence of discrimination
towards all individuals.
