HomeMy WebLinkAboutRes 44-98 09/15/1998 Resolution No. 44-98 A RESOLUTION ACKNOWLEDGING 150 YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE MOUNT PROSPECT COMMUNITY BY ST. JOHN LUTHERAN CHURCH WHEREAS, in 1848, twelve years before the Civil War and sixty-nine years before Mount Prospect was incorporated as a Village, thirty-two men affixed their signatures to the first Congregational Constitution thus establishing St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elk Grove Township; and WHEREAS, soon thereafter, the first Church building described as "a crude affair, made from oaks of the Grove, knotty timber and shingles" was erected on thirty acres of land donated by Christian and Dorothea Linnemann; and WHEREAS, on January 1, 1849, Reverend Clements Klein became the first of fifteen Pastors to lead the St. John congregation; and WHEREAS, St. John Lutheran School served as a first source of elementary education for area children when in 1854, Carl Laufer became the congregation's first school teacher; and WHEREAS, in January of 1892, a grand Church structure was erected to accommodate an ever-growing congregation, which structure though extensively remodeled, continues to serve its Congregation; and WHEREAS, over its 150-year history, St. John Lutheran Church has been the place of worship for many of the Village's founding families and their descendants, including the Busses, Willes and Linnemanns; and WHEREAS, St. John Lutheran Church has served as a religious, social and political focus for a large segment of the Mount Prospect population; and WHEREAS, St. John Lutheran Church continues to be an instrumental force in developing and nurturing the community fabric of Mount Prospect; and WHEREAS, during 1998, the Congregation of St. John Lutheran Church have proudly celebrated their 150-year history under the leadership of Pastor Jeff Gavin by, among other things, holding a reunion, marching in the Village's annual 4th of July Parade with a float, carriage and a 65-person contingent and holding a celebration dinner. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE VILLAGE OF MOUNT PROSPECT, COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS: ~ That the Mayor and Board of Trustees of the Village of Mount Prospect do hereby extend, on behalf of a grateful community, its sincere thanks for St. John Lutheran Church's contributions to the Mount Prospect community. ~ That the Mayor and Board of Trustees of the Village of Mount Prospect do hereby extend best wishes to the entire congregation as they celebrate the 150th Anniversary of St. John's founding. SECTION THREE: That the Mayor and Board of Trustees of the Village of Mount Prospect do hereby look forward to another 150 years of active community involvement by the St. John Congregation. That a copy of this Resolution be presented to St. John Lutheran Church as a permanent record of the recognition expressed herein.
