PRESENT: NICOLE LOGISZ, CHAIRWOMAN MICHAEL HIGGINSON ALYSSA HILLMAN ADAM KIEL STEVEN LONG DANIEL MILEWSKI NANDINI ROY DEREK STEINWEG A/A GEORGE CLOWES A/A BRIAN GILLIGAN A/A RICHARD LOHRSTORFER A/A KIMBERLEY NAGEL A/A PATTI WALPOLE CINDY RUMORE, SECRETARY ABSENT: MICHAEL ARTWOHL, ANGELO CAMPOS, A/A DAVID SCHEIN GUESTS: ERIC LOGISZ – PROSPECTIVE NEW MEMBER FROM HERSEY HIGH SCHOOL CALL TO ORDER Chairwoman Nicole Logisz called the January 09, 2008 Youth Commission meeting to order at 7:16 p.m. in the first floor training room of the Police and Fire Headquarters, Mount Prospect, Illinois. ROLL CALL Secretary Cindy Rumore called the roll. MOUNT PROSPECT YOUTH COMMISSION MINUTES JANUARY 09, 2008 PAGE TWO APPROVAL OF MINUTES Michael Higginson, seconded by Derek Steinweg, moved to approve the minutes of the December 05, 2007 Youth Commission meeting. Motion carried by unanimous approval. PUBLIC RELATIONS COMMITTEE Angelo Campos, Michael Higginson, Alyssa Hillman, Steve Long VILLAGE COMMISSION / ORGANIZATION MEETINGS Derek Steinweg attended Coffee with Council meeting and advised no youth related issues were discussed. Chairwoman Nicole Logisz passed around the sign up sheet for members to choose a Village commission / organization meeting to attend and report on youth related issues. Members reviewed the dates and signed up for various meetings. YOUTH RESOURCE CATALOG Steve Long sent an email to Maura El Metennani, asking her to include the Youth Resource Catalog and Flyer on the Village Youth Commission website. He also advised her of the new Youth Commission Community Volunteer Committee. RECRUITMENT COMMITTEE Michael Artwohl, Adam Kiel, Nicole Logisz, Derek Steinweg Chairwoman Nicole Logisz will attend River Trails Middle School National Junior Honor’s Society meeting on January 30, 2008 to discuss Youth Commission recruitment. Alyssa Hillman submitted the recruitment video announcement to Hersey High School to be played during morning announcements and they have requested to have it placed in Quick Time instead. Chairwoman Nicole Logisz advised Mayor Wilks will be interviewing two prospective new members for the Commission. A/A Kimberley Nagel advised submitting the Youth Commission flyer for publication in the Village Newsletter and contacting local newspapers to discuss recruitment. COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER COMMITTEE Steve Long, Michael Higginson, Daniel Milewski Members discussed contacting the Mount Prospect Library to participate in their volunteer program. Michael Higginson to contact Marilyn Genther at the library for further information on the library volunteer program. A/A Richard Lohrstorfer suggested contacting Mr. Tom Zander of the Downtown Merchants Association for the Youth Commission to participate/and assist in future community activities. Chairwoman Nicole Logisz to contact Mr. Zander on behalf of the Youth Commission for additional information. MOUNT PROSPECT YOUTH COMMISSION MINUTES JANUARY 09, 2008 PAGE THREE OLD BUSINESS YOUTH IN GOVERNMENT DAY Chairwoman Nicole Logisz discussed participating in Youth in Government Day in March. Members to contact their respective high school to inquire about participating in existing programs. Members to contact Village Manager’s office to create resolution for Youth in Government Day. TOWN MEETING Members discussed holding a “Town Meeting” to discuss youth related issues with youth in the community. Potential event locations, dates, and Village departments possibly interested in participating were discussed. A/A George Clowes to work with members to coordinate the planning of the Town Meeting. YOUTH VIEW A/A George Clowes advised the January program “Obesity” is currently running. The next Youth View taping date is January 24, 2008. Members discussed topics for the next taping and decided to discuss social security. The current presidential race and political topics were mentioned for future discussions. ANIMAL CONTROL ORDINANCE Youth Commission members discussed the issue of owners allowing their dogs to use public and private property to defecate and possible solutions: signage provided or sold by the Village to be displayed on properties, advise homeowner to apply liquid fence on their property to deter animals, photograph the dogs when they are committing the crime, fence the property where appropriate, police enforcement. Members agreed victim has to be an active participant in solving this problem. The Youth Commission solutions to this issue to be forwarded to Mayor Wilks. MOTION TO ADJOURN Steve Long, seconded by Alyssa Hillman, moved to adjourn the meeting. Motion carried by unanimous approval. MEETING ADJOURNED Chairwoman Nicole Logisz adjourned the meeting at 8:25 p.m. /cjr
