SAFETY COMMISSION
June 5, 1989
I CALL TO ORDER
The regular Meeting of the Mount Prospect Safety
Commission was called to order at 7:30 P.M.
II ROLL CALL
Present upon Roll Call: Lee Beening, Chairman
Del Ulrich, Fire Dept.
Ed Nastek, Police Dept.
Drew Johanson, Eng.
Absent: Arthur Coy, Commissioner
Andrew Mitchell, Vice Chairman
Also present, were 12 residents in the audience.
III APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Del Ulrich, seconded by Ed Nastek, moved to approve the
minutes of the regular meeting of the Safety Commission
held March 6, 1989.
Motion Passed Unanimously
IV NEW BUSINESS
A.) A request from Mr. Stephen. B. Alpert, 1121 Barberry
Ln., for STOP SIGNS at the intersection of Barberry
and Juniper Ln., was reviewed.. Both streets are
designated local with low traffic volumes and no
reported accidents in the last five years. Two
corners have sight obstructions caused by bushes and
Evergreen trees. Mr. Alpert states, cars anc
motorcycles often travel in excess of 50 MPH along
Barberry Ln.
The Safety Commission informed Mr. Alpert, stops
signs should not be used for speed control. After
further discussion Del Ulrich, seconded by Ed Nastek
moved to recommend to install a YIELD SIGN on
Juniper Ln. at Barberry Ln.
Motion Passed Unanimously
The Safety Commission also requested Mr. Alpert and
the resident at 1201 Barberry Lane to trim the
bushes and Evergreens on their properties to
eliminate the sight obstructions.

B.) A request from Mrs. Pam Doran, 513 S. I -Oka Ave. for
a STOP SIGN at the intersection of I -Oka Ave. and
ShaBonee Tr. was reviewed. Both streets are
designated local with low traffic volumesans is
adjacent to St. Raymond's school. There have been
4 reported accidents in the last 5 years.
Ed Nastek, seconded by Del Ulrich, moved to
recommend installing YIELD SIGNS on I -Oka Ave. at
ShaBonee Tr. and the installation of SCHOOL CROSSING
SIGNS on ShaBonee Tr. at I -Oka Ave.
Motion Passed Unanimously
C.) A request from Mr. Ron D'Alessandro, 571 Meier Rd.,
for additional traffic restrictions on Meier Road,
Lincoln S°. to Golf Rd. was reviewed. Meier Road
is designated a collector street with a 25 MPH speed
limit. Mr. D'Alessandro stated vehicles travel in
excess of 50 MPH along Meier Road. Ed Nastek
informed the Commission the Police Department has
been conducting selective enforcement in the area
and have been issuing speeding citations. Drew
Johanson stated the engineering study indicates the
major problem exist during the morning rush hours.
It appears motorist are using Meier Road as part of
a short cut to avoid traffic at the intersection of
Golf and Arlington Heights Road.
Drew Johanson, seconded by -Ed Nastek moved to
recommend we work with the Village of Arlington
Heights to eliminate the short cut and to continue
selective enforcement in the area.
Motion Passed -Unanimously
D.) At the request of Trustee Flores, the intersection
of Emerson & Henry Streets was reviewed. Both
streets are designated local with low traffic
volumes, no sight obstruction, and has Yield signs
on Emerson Street. There has been two accidents
reported at this intersection in the last five
years, the most. recent which occurred April 24,
1989. An unlicensed driver struck one of homes on
the corner.

V OTHER BUSINESS
The Safety Commission reviewed the parking in the
boxwood Area. Planning & Zoning Department plans
to have a consultant review the area to develop a
long term solution to the parking problems. In the
meantime, the Commission would like to recommend
certain safety measures.
Chairman Beening, seconded by Del Ulrich moved to
recommend the installation of 20 MPH SPEED LIMIT
SIGNS on Boxwood and Dogwood Lanes, NO PARKING HERE
TO CORNER SIGNS, 50' from each corner and PEDESTRIAN
CROSSING SIGNS on Boxwood Lane at Dogwood Lane.
Motion Passed Unanimously
VI ADJOURNMENT
Having no further business the Meeting was adjourned
at 9:00 P.M.
