The Village shares fiber-optic cable with the library for internet/phone services. This agreement was established in
2009 and has since expired in 2015, although services were provided to the Village as existed in the original
agreement.
Changes to the agreement are in favor of both parties and include:
• An increase in overall bandwidth from 250M to 500M of bandwidth. Bandwidth allocation hasn't changed in the
new agreement, which is split 60/40 with the library now receiving 300M and the Village 200M of bandwidth.
• A price reduction in the monthly fee, which is also split 60/40 with the Village paying 40% of the total cost.
Monthly fees paid by the Village under the new agreement fall to $360 per month, as opposed to $514 per
month paid from 2015 - June 2019.
Essentially, the Village is paying 30% less for double the bandwidth.
The terms of the agreement run through June 12, 2020. After this date, the Village should be up and running with
private fiber, no longer requiring a shared use agreement with the Library.
Related to the private fiber project for the Village: this installation is in conjunction with the construction of the new
Police Headquarters and the moving of IT services to the new building. The RFP for the Village's private fiber has been
released with an anticipated board review of the bid results at the August 20, 2019 meeting of the Village Board.
Alternatives
1. Adopt a resolution approving an amended and restated intergovernmental agreement between the Village of Mount
Prospect and the Mount Prospect Public Library for shared use of a fiber-optic cable.
2. Action at discretion of Village Board.
