IV. AUTOMATED METER READING UPDATE-FINAL RECOMMENDATIONS
Over the past several years, the WatedSewer Division staff of the Public Works Department has been
examining the policies and operations of the Division's meter shop. The goal of this examination is
to define a long-term plan for this important part of the Village's water distribution system.
Our ability to accurately capture water usage in its many forms helps the Vitlage to derive the revenue
which allows for the maintenance and operation of the Village's water distribution system. Accurate
meter readings ensure that users pay only for the water that they use and the Village receives all of
the revenues that it is legally entitled to.
Part of the staff review has been to look at and test various automated water meter reading systems
That review is now complete and staff is prepared to make its recommendations. Given the cost
associated with implementing a fully automated system and coupled with the fact that the Village is
currently capturing 94% of the total quantity of water we purchase through the Joint Action Water
Agency, it is suggested that the present combination of automated and manual read systems is
working quite well.
The attached report outlines the parameters of the review and lays out staff's recommendations.
Appropriate staff will be on hand to answer questions and facilitate discussion.
