MAYOR'S REPORT Subject 3.3 PROCLAMATION: National Vietnam Veterans Day - March 29, 2019 Access Public Type Information Public Content L -J Nati&nal Vietnam Vet&ns Day.pdf (1.4 KB) Administrative Content Executive Content PROCLAMATION NATIONAL VIETNAM VETERANS DAY" MARCH 29, 2019 WHEREAS, on January 12, 1962, United States Army pilots carried out Operation Chopper, marking America's first combat mission against the Viet Cong and the beginning of one of our nation's most challenging wars; and WHEREAS, the Vietnam War is a story of service members of different backgrounds, colors, and creeds who came together to complete a daunting mission; a story of Americans from every corner of our Nation, a story of patriots who braved the line of fire who fought hour after hour, day after day to preserve the liberties who hold true; and WHEREAS, eleven years of combat left their imprint on a generation. Thousands returned home bearing shrapnel and scars, burdened by the invisible wounds of post-traumatic stress, of Agent Orange, of memories that would never fade; and WHEREAS, more than 58,000 laid down their lives in service to our nation including Mount Prospect servicemen Wiliam Daley, Frank F. Gagliano, and David William Skibbe; and WHEREAS, on March 29, 1973, the last of our troops left Vietnam and in one of the war's most profound tragedies, many men and women came to face treatment unbefitting their courage and a welcome unworthy of their example; and WHEREAS, the Vietnam Veterans Recognition Act was signed into law on March 28, 2017 designating March 29 of each year as National Vietnam Veterans Day; and WHEREAS, to honor their sacrifice by serving them as well as they served us; we pay tribute to the fallen, the missing, the wounded, the millions who served and the millions more who awaited their return and on this day, we honor their proud legacy with our deepest gratitude. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Arlene A. Juracek, Mayor of the Village of Mount Prospect, do hereby proclaim March 29, 2019 as "NATIONAL VIETNAM VETERANS DAY" and I encourage all citizens to observe this day and to honor all their proud legacy with our deepest gratitude.
