MEETING MINUTES
OCTOBER 17, 1996
PRESENT:
Bill Donovan, Holly Johnson, George Luteri, Rod Mobus, Harold Rentschler, Ken
Westlake and Mary Winkler.

ABSENT:
Dick Bachhuber and Mary Rosen.
CALL TO ORDER:
Chairman Westlake called the meeting to order at 7:30 PM.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Chairmen Westlake made a motion to postpone approval of the minutes until the
Coordinator had an opportunity to review the minutes on her computer system. There
appeared to be a gap in the minutes. The motion was seconded and unanimously
approved.
CITIZEN FORUM:
There were no citizens in attendance to address the Commission.
SOLID WASTE PROGRAMS/DATA:
The Solid Waste Coordinator informed the Commission that there is a dwindling number
of businesses accepting used motor oil from citizens. In two years the number of
businesses in the SWANCC region accepting this material dropped from over 70 to less
than 15. One of the reasons businesses discontinued this practice was due to abuse of the
service. Individuals mix other materials with the gas and/or leave unacceptable materials
which the businesses then must pay to dispose of. The material is also frequently left
after business hours in unsafe and unsecured areas.
The Village is working with businesses to encourage their accepting the used motor oil.
The Village will continue to assist with community education and other support areas as
well.
The Coordinator reported the leaf program was running smoothly. So far no unusual
items were found buried in the leaves!
She also reported on the Kidney Foundation's current fundraising effort. The foundation
is encouraging individuals with junk cars to "recycle" their cars by donating them to the
foundation. The organization will receive revenue from the scrap. This program is also
being promoted to municipal agencies in disposing of abandoned cars.
CLEANUP WEEK:
The tonnage collected during fall clean-up was not available. However, the collection
was reported to have went very well.
OTHER BUSINESS:
• Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day
It appears the volume of material collected during the September 14, Household
Hazardous Collection may have contributed to the length of time participants waited to
dispose of their waste. 533.70 55 -gallon drums of hazardous waste were collected
during the seven hour collection.
• Small Business Recycling Seminar
The Coordinator invited any interested Commissioners to attend the Small Business
Recycling Seminar to be held in Oak Park. The fee would be paid by the Village and she
would provide transporation.
• Make A Difference Day
The Coordinator invited the Commission Members to participate in the October 26, Make
A Difference Day. Home Depot had submitted the winning project to the Village; home
winterization for seniors and/or handicapped inviduals meeting financial guidelines.
• Randhurst
A tentative meeting has been scheduled with BFI to discuss recycling at Randhurst. The
Commission will be updated on any progress made in this area.
NEXT MEETING:
The next meeting was scheduled for Thursday, November 21, 7:30 PM in the Public
Works Facility, 1700 West Central Road.
ADJOURNMENT:
There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 8:30 PM.
