Lisa Angell - Public Works ABSENT Bill Donovan, Ken Westlake and Mary Winkler. CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 7:40 p.m. by Vice Chairman Luteri. MINUTES The minutes from the March 20, meeting were unanimously approved as written. CITIZEN FORUM No residents were in attendance to address the Commission. SOLID WASTE PROGRAMS AND DATA • Prospect Commons - Approximately 70 residents attended the solid waste educational meetings held at Prospect Commons during March. Overall the meetings appeared successful, however, as the meetings did not include all the residents there remains a significant number of residents still needing to be educated on proper disposal methods and the recycling program. • Earth Flags - Four Mount Prospect Schools each earned an Earth Flag from SWANCC for their recycling and waste reduction programs. Robert Frost Elementary (Cypress Drive), John Jay Elementary, Fairview Elementary and Holmes Junior High School. • 6 and 12 pack plastic ring collection - For the second year in a row St. Raymond's school has collected the second highest number of 6 and 12 pack plastic rings of schools in the SWANCC region. The school was again awarded a park bench made from recycled plastic. The bench was manufactured by Envirowood and awarded by SWANCC. • ARC Disposal Company - The Coordinator is scheduled to meet with ARC staff on Wednesday, May 18. She stated Public Works had received a rash of complaints regarding service level and wanted to discuss this matter with the route drivers. Several of the Commissioners commented that they have always received excellent service from ARC. One Commissioner did state however, that he too felt there was a decline in service. • Solid Waste Data - The coordinator reported that ARC continues to collect over one million pounds of recyclables per month. She also added there has no been resolution to the Village's dispute with ARC regarding recycling revenue. PUBLIC WORKS OPEN HOUSE The Coordinator reported the Solid Waste Commission display was ready for the May 17, Open House. She asked the Commissioners to let her know if they planned on participating in the event. 4th OF JULY PARADE As there will not be a meeting before the parade the Commission discussed what the focus of the Solid Waste "float" should be this year. After discussing a few ideas the Commission agreed the message should be, a thank you to the residents of Mount Prospect for all their efforts and identify the amount of material recycled between 1988 and 1996. The Coordinator stated she will send out a notice reminding the Commissioners of the parade with the suggested time of arrival and "float" location. OTHER BUSINESS The Coordinator informed the members that Envirowood had been sold and would be relocating outside of Illinois. This prompted one of the Commissioners if anyone had heard about problems with recycled plastic. Apparently there may have been an isolated problem but most of the Commissioners responded they were unaware of any problems with the product. The Coordinator invited the Commission members to participate in the June 7, clean-up of the vacant lot between Prospect Commons and Brownstone Apartments. The project is a joint effort between the Village and resident volunteers. NEXT MEETING The next meeting was scheduled for Thursday, July 17, 7:30 p.m., at the Public Works Facility, 1700 West Central Road. ADJOURNMENT There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:30 p.m. Respectfully submitted, M. Lisa Angell Solid Waste Coordinator
