HomeMy WebLinkAbout11/20/1997 SWC minutesMOUNT PROSPECT SOLID WASTE COMMISSION NOVEMBER 20, 1997 MEETING MINUTES PRESENT Dick Bachhuber, George Luteri, Rod Mobus, Harold Rentschler, Ken Westlake and Mary Winkler. Sue Turayhi - Mount Prospect resident and business owner Lisa Angell - Public Works ABSENT Mary Rosen CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 7:40 p.m. by Chairman Westlake. APPROVAL OF MINUTES The minutes were unanimously approved as written. CITIZEN FORUM (The Coordinator introduced Ms. Turayhi to the Commission members and gave a brief introduction as to her interest in attending the meeting.) Ms. Turayhi had contacted the Solid Waste Coordinator prior to the Commission meeting and expressed an interest in learning more about environmentally safe disposal practices for hazardous materials. She wanted to incorporate the information into a class she was going to be teaching on interior design. She was not only concerned with the paints but the materials in manufactured furniture as well. The Commission members thanked Ms. Turayhi for attending the meeting and commended her for her efforts in promoting and practicing environmentally safe purchasing and disposal habits. Ms. Turayhi indicated she would be willing to become involved in community programs to promote to the environment SOLID WASTE PROGRAM AND DATA • The Coordinator reported that the recycling program implemented at Countryside Apartments needed to improve before the property would realize a discount in solid waste services. In addition to minimal participation garbage is being placed in some of the toters. There was also discussion regarding revitalization of the residential recycling program through increased community education efforts. The Commission suggested evaluating the feasibility of a cooperative program between the Village and the Mount Prospect Park District to increase the volume of recyclables recovered in the parks, i.e., sporting events, park functions, etc. The Coordinator was asked to invite representatives from the Park District to the next Commission meeting to discuss a potential partnership. • The Coordinator stated the revenue issue between the Village and ARC Disposal Company appeared resolved. The Village had deducted the amount due from payment for October solid waste services. • The Commission members expressed positive comments on the loose leaf collection program performed by Public Works. It was noted that the extended leaf collection program would begin as scheduled, November 24. NEW BUSINESS None. NEXT MEETING The next meeting was scheduled for January 15, 1998 in the Public Works Facility, 1700 West Central Road at 7:30 p.m. ADJOURNMENT There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 8:50 p.m. Respectfully submitted, M.
