MEETING MINUTES

CALL TO ORDER
Chairman Westlake called the meeting to order at 7:40 p.m.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The were no minutes to approve.
CITIZEN FORUM
There were no citizens in attendance to address the Commission.
SOLID WASTE PROGRAMS AND DATA
The Coordinator updated the Commission on the status of the various multifamily solid
waste/recycling programs including Prospect Commons. Prospect Commons has chronic
problems with enforcement of acceptable waste disposal practices as well as excessive
refuse due to overcrowding. The Solid Waste Coordinator continues to work with the
Health Division and Prospect Commons management in these areas.
The Coordinator informed the Commission about the decision by many municipal haulers
to discontinue the collection of polystyrene; the polystyrene market has virtually dried up.
However, as the Village only collects a small quantity of the material ARC's processor will
continue to accept the material from residential program.
COMMERCIAL SOLID WASTE SURVEY
The Solid Waste Coordinator updated the Commission on the progress of the commercial
solid waste survey. The survey is the initial phase of the Village's research and evaluation
on the merits of an exclusive commercial solid waste contract.
The survey was reviewed and approved by the Mount Prospect Chamber of Commerce.
Once the data is compiled the Chamber will be invited to participate in the recommenda-
tion phase of the process.
The Coordinator will present the initial results of the survey to the Commission at the next
meeting.
REFUSE SERVICE IN THE NORTHWEST
The solid waste industry is very static right now due to mergers and buyouts of smaller
companies. It is believed that this activity is affecting the quality of residential services.
However, a recent survey of SWANCC member communities suggests the problems may
be plaguing only those communities with a particular hauler. Apparently this particular
company has difficulty keeping staff, hence collections are not being made.
(The Village continues to receive acceptable service from ARC.)
OTHER BUSINESS
The Commission agreed to defer discussion of Recycling in the Parks.
NEXT MEETING
The neat meeting was scheduled for Thursday, November 19, 1998 in the Public Works
Facility, 1700 West Central Road at 7:30 p.m.
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 8:45 p.m.
