SUBJECT: REPLACEMENT OF FIRE DEPARTMENT VEHICLE 505 STATE BID
Background
Fire Department vehicle 505 was scheduled for replacement in 2012. Replacement of the
vehicle has been deferred as a result of the vehicle's overall good condition and low
mileage. This year I recommend that this vehicle be replaced. The condition of 505 has
deteriorated and has many needed repairs. Attached to this memo are exhibits A, B, and C
that outline the condition and evaluation reported by the Public Works department. The
current mileage of the vehicle is over 45,000 miles.
Vehicle 505
Vehicle 505 is currently a Ford F350 pickup truck. It is utilized by the Fire Prevention
Bureau for fire inspections, fire investigations, and public education activities. The truck is
equipped with the majority of the fire department's fire investigation equipment and
numerous public education supplies.
I recommend replacing vehicle 505 with a 2016 Ford F250 Super Cab pickup truck
equipped with a service box. The new service box will allow the fire department to store all
of the fire investigation equipment in one central location. In addition, extra equipment will
be added to assist in alternate power and lighting. The ability to have all of the fire
investigation equipment on scene in one vehicle would allow other fire apparatus to be able
to return to service more quickly.
The new proposed vehicle would allow the fire department greater transport options during
inclement winter weather and allow for improved towing capacity which is needed for the
children's fire safety house.
Recommendation
I recommend the purchase of one (1) F250 Pickup Truck (including service box) from the
State of Illinois Joint Purchasing Contract award winner Bob Ridings Fleet Sales Program
located in Taylorville, Illinois at a cost not to exceed $35,600. The remaining $2,400 dollars
in the budget for the vehicle replacement would be used for emergency lighting and vehicle
decal markings.
