HomeMy WebLinkAbout11/06/2013 CC Minutes MOUNT PROSPECT CENTENNIAL COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING Meeting Location: Meeting Date and Time: Mount Prospect Village Hall – Lower Level Conference Room November 6, 2013 50 S Emerson Street 3:00 p.m. Mount Prospect, Illinois 60056 I. CALL TO ORDER Co-Chair Jean Murphy began meeting at 3:05 pm. II.ROLL CALL Members present were Alexander Bertolucci, Lisa Blaszinski, Gerald Farley, Janice Farley, Leo Floros, Linda Hoefert, Jean Murphy, Michaele Skowron, Jessica Thunberg, Christy Watychowicz, and John Zulaski. Ex-officio members present: Michael Janonis, Arlene Juracek, and Marianthi Thanopoulos. Member absent: none Richard Mayer, Journal reporter III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES September 4, 2013 Meeting Minutes. Moved by G. Farley and seconded by Juracek. Passed unanimously. III. CITIZENS TO BE HEARD NO OTHER CITIZENS WERE PRESENT. IV. OLD BUSINESS 2014 village vehicle sticker: School District #214 contest – Mike Janonis. A.Thunburg reported that it is completed and will be available for 2014. Mt Prospect students of all ages are represented on the sticker. B. Report: visit to Special Events Commission September Meeting; Leo Floros/Jean Murphy. Co – Chairs reported that meeting went well. Committees will work in parallel. Special Events will be asked to th use annual themes for their events to enhance 100 Anniversary. C. Report: Village app discussions with MP Library Board – John Zulaski E Communication Sub Committee was established: Zulaski, Thunburg, and Thanopoulos are members. C. Google Docs for transmittal of ideas – Jean Murphy Google Docs necessitates a g mail account. Consequently, Centennial Commission will not use this approach for information exchange. D. Open Meeting Acts training – completion by November 20, 2013 Village Clerk Lisa Angell will arrange for the required training. A few Commission members have to take training. V. NEW BUSINESS A. Introduction: new Centennial Commission member Jessica Thunberg from High School District 214 was introduced. B. Yearly themes (random or progression?); 2015 and 2016 2014 No theme. Commission will use 2014 as a time to plan. Juracek quoted the Village Board Purpose when Commission was authorized: …establish commission to plan and promote a coordinated effort to celebrate MP’s centennial year. At the next meeting Commission will discuss themes for 2015, 2016 & 2017 Thanopoulos suggested the following 3 themes for the 3 years: 2015 DIVERSITY leading to 100 years -Example was the Kiwanis’ Faces of Evanston with photos of citizens. No action taken. -Establish a Sister City in Germany (business slant). No action taken. 2016 HISTORY 2017 CELEBRATION Plant purple flowers to bloom in 2017. Coordinate w/MP forester to use different colored purple flowers. Arbor Day planting in front of historical society building. C.Events/Celebrations – Brainstorming Session 1. Logos/Anniversary Colors. At the next meeting Thunburg will facilitate an activity to identify a slogan for the three years. Co-Chair Murphy will approach Harper College to work on Logo. Purple is the color for 100 years. 2. Marketing/commemorative items: banners, village stickers, calendars, coins, social media apps, Facebook page, etc. After identification of logo & colors, then discussion of above will occur. 3. Select Facebook name – After discussion it was agreed that Thanopolous will explore obtaining “Mount Prospect 100th Anniversary”. 4. Fundraising: a) open 2015 Sèvres trip to public through District 214 travel – Mayor Juracek and b) sell “shares” in Centennial and issue non-redeemable stock certificates – Skip and Janice Farley No Action Taken. Village has $2000 in line item for Commission. BANNERS could be a fund raiser from businesses. Banners could be personalized for businesses and hung for a year. What are the number of banners/poles? Is there a map of poles? Contract might include language about weather hindering hanging. Discussion of EXPENSES: No action was taken. Fireworks Time capsule Printing App Facebook Water tower NO ACTION WAS TAKEN ON THE FOLLOWING AGENDA ITEMS. 5 . Possible adoption: German Sister Cities; reflect Village roots. 6 . Historic Collection: oral histories/photos from residents. 7 . Infrastructure public art: décor on water tower; painting/adoption of fire hydrants. 8 . Events: a) re-enactment of incorporation paper signing in schoolhouse b) unearthing and burying of time capsules c) white lights d) dinner e) geocaching event f) “Growing Up in MP series and g) old- fashioned spelling bee for adults in schoolhouse, etc. 9. Open Invitation: clubs, organizations and village departments create their own events/publication/ or theming their regular events to highlight Centennial. Several easels were used to capture brainstorming ideas from Commission members. Co-Chair Murphy took photos and will transcribe ideas for attachment to these minutes. VI. OTHER BUSINESS None VII. NEXT MEETING Wed, January 8, 2014 – 3:00 p.m. Mount Prospect Village Hall – 3rd floor Executive Conference Room VIII. ADJOURN Co-Chair Murphy adjourned meeting at 4:45 pm.
