I.CALL TO ORDER Co-Chair Murphy convened meeting at 3:02 p.m.
II. ROLL CALL Members present: Sharon Anderson, Alexander Bertolucci,
Gerald “Skip” Farley, Janice Farley, Leo Floros, Linda Hoefert,
Elaine Hundreiser, Jean Murphy, Michaele Skowron, Christy Watychowicz,
and John Zulaski
Members absent: none
Ex-officio members present: Mayor Arlene A. Juracek, David Strahl, and Marianthi
Thanopoulos
Ex-officio members absent: Mike Janonis
III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
November 5, 2014 Meeting Minutes: Corrected by Bertolucci. Moved by Floros.
Seconded by Farley. Motion passed.
III.CITIZENS TO BE HEARD Todd Wessell, Journal & Topics Editor & Publisher asked to be
heard on the Centennial Magazine discussion (IV. C)
3:05 p.m. Zulaski entered the meeting.
IV.OLD BUSINESS
A.Report: Electronic communications – dissolve committee? Work complete – John
Zulaski
Zulaski moved that Committee be dissolved. Skowron seconded. Motion Passed.
Zulaski suggested a soft launch of Commission Websitein Q415with content.
B.Report: Hiring of independent contractor to populate the website – Jean Murphy
Lindsay Rice, Executive Directorof the Mount Prospect Historical Society, will
populate website with content. Murphy will oversee hours. Historical Society will
th
invoice 100 Anniversary Commission for Rice’s time.
C.Report: Possible publication of Centennial magazine/book by Daily Herald with ad
sales – Floros & Farley met w/Daily Herald editor to discuss a magazine to
th
commemorate the 100 anniversary. It would include historical content (photos &
narrative) and advertising. Ads will become part of the sponsorship package.
Anniversary Commission would receive a predetermined share of revenue.
Distribution proposed to each Mount Prospect (MP) residence.
Wessell spoke to having an opportunity to also publish a souvenir magazine. Journal
staff would write the articles. Distribution would occur in any manner the
Commission requests. Suggestion: Commission would write a letter to all MP
businesses and say that two magazines would be available for publication. Floros
and Farley will meet with Journal. Two proposals will be presented to Commission
next meeting. Magazine ads will not be part of sponsorship package.
D.Report: Possible musical extravaganza – Leo Floros
Floros met with Jan Scott, St. Mark’s Lutheran Church music director. Suggestions
included the following. Perhaps a week of activities. Activities might include
founding family representatives. Might include entertainers raised in MP: e.g., Bruce
Boxleitner, Lee DeWyze.
Anderson had contacted Ruth Yueill, the Mount Prospect Park District Cultural Arts
Manager. Yueill suggested a week of cultural events. Floros, Anderson, and
Hundresier will meet with Yueill and report at next meeting.
E.Report: Fire hydrant contest update – Christy Watychowicz
Village has contacted American Illinois Water about decorating fire hydrants in their
area. Repainting of hydrants would take place in Village’s regular repainting cycle.
Resident’s application will include design. Village employees will approve design.
Village employees will monitor finished hydrants. Watychowicz will notify stores that
sell paint as to nature and time ofproject. Businesses may want to offer a discount,
create a section for hydrant paint, etc. Judging will take place in October 2016.
Suggestion was made to use Facebook and website for residents to vote. Paint
sellers might want to become sponsors of paint contest. List those vendors who
become sponsors.
Prices for painting a hydrant: Commercial=$150. Residential=$50. Strahl will find out
hydrant painting cycle. Cost of repainting to be determined and who is responsible.
Determine one photographer to take all photos of hydrants for judging.
Content will be due to Village PIO Marianthi Thanopoulos by February 1, 2016. An
insert will be placed in the March 2016 village newsletter. Applications will be
available May 1, 2016. Painting will run from Sept 1, 2016 through Sept 30, 2016.
Voting will run from Oct. 15, 2016 through Nov. 15, 2016. There will be prizes for
contest (maybe 3). Geographic distribution will be considered.
V.NEWBUSINESS
A.Ideas for permanent memorial – Arlene Juracek
Rededicating and renaming of “Village Green” to “Centennial Green” will occur in
Oct. 2017. Large Sign Board of history and founding families. Smaller boards for
individual founding families. Where should the boards be located? Suggestion is to
locate laminated signs on pedestals. Four individual signs for founding families in
garden that is parallel to interior sidewalk.
Founding family names in bronze at four corners of the Busse and Emerson
intersection.Juracek will price items for next meeting.
B.Posters using photography of Mike Zarnek – Juracek, Thanopoulos and Murphy
MP Resident and Photographer Mike Zarnek was approached to use his photos for
posters – Zarnek will not charge a fee for his photo. Commission will choose one
photo to become the designated poster for sale.
VI.OTHER BUSINESS – member roundtable –additional ideas? Comments?
Murphy reported MP Historical Society will handle the selling and shipping of Centennial
commemorative items for a fee.
MP Library, MP Park District, etc. will sell limited items for Centennial commission.
Bertolucci will look into commemorative license plates from Illinois Secretary of State.
Friday, Feb. 20, 2015, Murphy will speak at Elected Officials Afterhours at MP Library.
